PORT PERRY "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2000 - 19 Pine Ridge Garden Club to kick off 2000 with first meeting March 7 aid of the By Shirley Love The concept of a Horticultural Society which would serve the Port Perry, Blackstock, Nestleton area was the brain-child of Mrs. Frances Newton of Nestleton. Mrs. Newton did a lot of research into the feasibility of starting such an organization. In 1976 she began to work towards the formation of the society, enlisting the Ontario Horticultural Association, especially Mr. Russ Gomme, secretary of that organization. Under his guidance, she began to search for prospective members, people who might be interested enough in gardening and other aspects of horticul- ture to become members. Mrs. Newton, along with her son Brian, canvassed neighbours, friends, any- one she met whom she thought showed any inter- est, telephoning people in the Blackstock, Nestleton and Port Perry sections of Planning for your retirement years From Page 18 stantial earned income in the year they turn 69 can- not benefit from the high RRSP deduction room this creates since they cannot make a contribution in the following year. Fortunately, there is a strategy which financial advisors have been recommending to taxpayers in this situation. We'll take as an exam- ple, a 69-year-old taxpayer whose earned income in the year would be high enough to create RRSP deduction room of $13,500 in the following year and who does not have any unused deduction room as of the current year. The taxpayer cannot contribute the $13,500 in the following year, since his RRSP will mature at the end of December. The taxpayer should therefore make this contribution in the current year, say, in December. The taxpayer will be subject to a | per cent per month penalty for contributions to an RRSP above his limit for the current year (he is allowed a $2,000 excess contribution "cushion" to which the penalty tax will not apply). However, on Jan. | of the following year, the new RRSP deduction room of $13,500 opens up and he will be allowed a deduction for his previous year con- tribution. The taxpayer only ends up being subject to a penalty tax of $115 ($13,500 -$2,000) x 1 per cent), since he is only con- sidered to have excess contributions above his limit for one month. In return, depending on the individual's tax bracket, a tax deferral as high as $6,750 may be achieved. After many calls, she finally had sufficient names on her list to allow an organi- zation to be started. After some discussion it was decided to name the new society, Pine Ridge Garden Club, since it encompassed a wide area, including Cartwright, Port Perry, Greenbank, etc. Mrs. Newton served as the first president, with Roy Grierson serving as first vice-president and Paul Johansen as second vice-president. The secre- tary was Claudia McDiarmid and Kristine Wilson was appointed treasurer. Meetings were scheduled for the first Tuesday of each month, with the exception of January and February, since the weather can'be a problem during the winter months. The annual meet- ings were to be held in December at which time the executive and board of members for the upcoming year would be elected. Two flower shows were ( DB. The May show had seven' classes in the Cultural Division and three classes in the Decorative Division. In September the show consisted of 13 class es in the Cultural Division and three classes in the Decorative Division. A newsletter was started and a yearbook made up giving members the pro- posed programs for the year and also the show lists to enable them to plan ahead. Thus started the Pine Ridge Garden Club, which has grown and prospered over the years. Many of the Charter Members are still active members today. The club is very active in the com- munity and for many years has been involved with local beautification. At pre- sent members plant two flowerbeds at Lakeridge Health Corp., Port Perry, one at Nestleton Hall as well as helping the resi- dents of the Port Perry Nursing Home. In the past, plantings were done at the Central Seven Workshop, Scugog Shores Museum, and the Rotary Bandshell in Port Perry's Palmer Park was landscaped by members. The work is done on a vol- untary basis and the plants are supplied by the club. Membership in the club has risen. New members are always welcome. Each month we have speakers on a variety of topics which include house plants, all forms of gardening, flower arranging, dried flowers, control of pests and dis- eases, to name a few. The club meets on the first Tuesday of each month from March to December at the Nestleton Hall at 7:30 7 p.m. On March 7 the club opens with a pot luck sup- per at 6:45 p.m. This evening is also our mem- bership night. Cost of mem- bership is $8 single and $12 family, per year. Everyone is welcome. For more information please call Shirley Love at 986- 5330. Seagrave News by Ann Sandiford Barr (our leap year baby).
