FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2000 18 - PORT PERRY "WEEKEND STAR" Blackstock native was a top surgeon, founder of Toronto's Wellesley Hospital DR. H.A. Bruce topic of Royal Military Institute talk By Paul Arculus Special to The Star Dr. H.A. Bruce, Scugog"s most noted son, was the subject of a talk at Toronto's Royal Military Institute on Tuesday evening. Dr. Charles Godfrey, noted medical historian and physi- cian at Wellesley Hospital, gave a talk on the life and accomplishments of Dr. H.A. Bruce. Dr. Godfrey discussed Bruce's birth in Blackstock and his schooling and youth in Port Perry. Since Bruce graduated from Port Perry High School at the age of 15, he was not old enough to attend university. As a result, Bruce worked for two years at Allison's drug store in Port Perry before becoming a medical student in Toronto. Dr. Bruce went on to become one of Canada's leading sur- geons and the founder of Toronto's Wellesley Hospital. During World War | he was the Inspector General of the Canadian Medical Forces. In that position he issued a scathing report condemning the poor medical treatment of Canadian soldiers. His report became a political football for many years. After the cessation of hostil- ities, Dr. Bruce resumed his duties at Wellesley Hospital and maintained controlling interest in the facility until 1948 when it was taken over by Toronto General Hospital. Dr. Bruce was honoured by being appointed as Ontario's Lieutenant Governorin 1932. In 1940 he became a member of parliament for the riding of Parkdale in Toronto. He made several visits to his birth place in Blackstock and to his childhood home in Port Perry. Dr. Godfrey's talk was enthu- siastically attended by almost 100 people at the Military Institute on University Avenue in Toronto. Most of those in attendance were from the med- ical profession. Their interest in Dr. Bruce was heightened by the pending closure of the his- toric Wellesley Hospital in the heart of the city. A DREAM Last minute RRSP tax planning [s a Gift We Give Ourselves Currently, a taxpayer's RRSP deduction limit for a given year is based on 18 per cent of the previous year's earned income up to a maximum of $13,500. Earned income is generally income from an office or employment, a business, rental of real property, and certain other amounts. The limit is increased by any unused deduction "room" from previous years and dekreased by two other amounts known as the pen- sion adjustment and past service pension adjust- ment, applicable to employees who participate in certain types of employ- ee-sponsored pension plans. For 1998 and later taxa- tion years, the formula car- ries another component, called the pension adjust- ment reversal (PAR), which is added to the RRSP applicable only in situa- tions where a terminated employer was a participant in a certain type of employ- er-sponsored plan. Taxpayers can make deductible RRSP contribu- tions up to the end of the year in which they turn 69. Because of the one year time lag in the calculation of the 18 per cent earned income limit, it appears as At H&R Block we're deduction limit otherwise calculated.
