Canadians of many Christian traditions will gather together on March 3 to celebrate the World Day of Prayer. This is a time to strengthen the bonds of Christian unity, share faith in Jesus Christ, be enriched by other faith experiences, pray, and take action for social justice. World Day of Prayer affirms that prayer and action are inseparable, and that both have an immeasur- able influence in the world. This year's liturgy was prepared by the Christian women of Indonesia. The theme is "Talitha, cum! Young Woman, Stand Up!" This is a powerful service which is meant to sup- port young women on their way to an upright life and to encourage others to follow them. From 2 Timothy: | remind you to fan into flame the gift of God that is in you. For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and self-discipline. In Indonesia, over 50 per cent of the population is under 20 years of age. World Day of Prayer services have their roots in the early 20th century when women in Great Britain, Canada and the USA were each having a national Day of Prayer. The first truly interna- tional day of prayer was held between Canada and the United States in 1921. Today, services are held in over 170 coun- tries around the world in Canada. World Day of Prayer is coordinated by the Women's Inter- Church Council of Canada, and is celebrat- ed in more than 2000 communities. For more information on the services being held in our community, please contact Dorothy DeShane, local coordi- nator, at 985-2217. Fax us your news, scores: 985-3708
