PORT PERRY "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2000 - 13 Writers' Circle extends poetry contest deadline For those who have thought about entering this year's Dan Sullivan Memorial Poetry Contest but haven't done a thing about it, the deadline has been extended to March 31. The Dan Sullivan Memorial Poetry Contest is sponsored by the Writers' Circle of Durham Region (WCDR). It was established in 1995 as an annual compe- tition to be held in memory of Dan Sullivan, Durham poet and Writers' Circle member. The national contest is open to all Canadian residents and encompasses the following categories: Children (up to age 12); youth (up to age 18); and adults. Poems must be unpublished and may be of any subject matter. Three monetary prizes will be award- ed in each category: children - first - $75; second - $50; third - $25; youth - first - $150; second - $100; third - $75; adult - first - $300; second - $200; third - $100. Winners will be announced on May 13, as part of WCDR"s Annual General Meeting. First place winners will also be pub- lished in the Word Weaver, WCDR's bi- monthly magazine, and winners may also be invited to read their work at future WCDR events. Poems may be of any subject matter, type or style, must be previously unpub- lished and must be your own work. The length of each entry must not exceed 50 written lines. This may be one poem, or up to three short poems, whose cumulative total does not exceed 50 lines. There is no limit to the number of entries you submit, but each one must be submitted as a separate entry with the appropriate entry fee ($10 per sub- mission for adults and $5 per entry for children and youth). The entry fee of payment must be by cheque or money order, in Canadian funds, payable to the Writers' Circle of Durham Region. Material will be judged on originality and the sense of the craft of poetry shown in the work. Entries must be post- marked no later than midnight March 31, 2000. Janetville man lands top prize in Simcoe tourney By Jeff Bower Special to the Star More than 100 ice anglers took to the frozen waters of Lake Simcoe Saturday to compete in the first-ever Beaverton Harbour Ice Fishing Derby. Competitors enjoyed good weather for the open air event, fishing within a one-square-kilo- metre area west of the southern tip of Thorah Island. A total of 27 lake trout and 19 whitefish were caught by the anglers and total weight was used to determine the winners. John VanVeen of Janetville took top spot -- and the $1,000 grand prize -- with a total catch of 26.48 lbs. Helping him secure the win was a hefty 17-1b. laker. Placing second was Leonard Burden with a total catch of 21.86 Ibs., finishing just ahead of Dale Weaver with a 21.24- Ib. tally.
