Throughout the play references to the Industrial Revolution's impact on the dignity of the individual mirror today's struggle to balance technology and humanity. Sweeney Todd, a barber, has recently returned from exile to seek vengeance upon Judge Turpin, the one who sent him away. The story is complicated when Sweeney Todd meets Fleet Street baker Mrs. Lovett, who tells him a strange tale of a judge who adopted the daughter of a man he had forced away from England. Upon hear- ing the story, Sweeney Todd is consumed with seeking revenge. It is here that the story begins to form a deli- cious combination of dark comedy, great music and deadly delicacies.
