PORT PERRY "WEEKEND STAR" Granted a hea Connie. Millennium grants help local students By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Several post-secondary students * from Scugog were given reason to cele- brate last month, after receiving notices that they had been named recipi- ents of the Canada Millennium Scholarship. At least four township residents were included in an initiative by the federal government, which hand- ed out more than 75,000 financial awards to post- secondary students across Canada. Through the Canada Millennium Scholarship program, the government is handing out more than $215 million. The govem- ment calls the grants "an important investment in Canada's youth and are intended to help young Canadians acquire the knowledge and skills they require in order to partici- pate in a changing econo- my." Among those receiving an award of $3,000 was Willerton, a Seagrave resident attend- ing The Toronto School of Business in Newmarket. "l got it in the mail "about three or four weeks ago... it just showed up. | was really quite sur- prised," said the former Dominion Auto employee. After the Uxbridge plant closed its doors last year, Ms Willerton took a course at Durham College before deciding to further advance her education. The money will be credited to her bank to help pay down her school loan. Also receiving a grant from the federal govern- ment was Caesarea's Joseph Pugeli. "I read about it briefly in the newspaper and then I didn't know anything about it until my mom called me and said | had received it in the: mail," said Mr. Pugelj, a 21-year Sir Wilfred Laurier University student study- ing Society and Anthropology in Waterloo. His $3,000 award will also be deducted from his student loan. "It's nice to think that in the long run, a year or so from now, | will have a lot | less to pay off of my loan." Claire Notman, a Proutt Rd. resident, was also awarded $3,000. Emily Cosway of Port Perry also recently received notice that she's a recipient. Connie Willerton of Seagrave is among local stu- dents to receive a Millennium Grant. DAVID M.
