i ----_--_-- PORT PERRY "WEEKEND STAR" FRIDAY, JANUARY 7, 2000 - 3 Big Brothers-Sisters plan tasty fundraiser for February By Chris Hall Port Perry Star The Big Brothers-Big Sisters of North Durham will kick off their largest fundraiser of the year next month with something a little hot 'n spicy. For the third consecutive year, the organization will host its annual chicken wing competition on Feb. 4 at the Royal Canadian Legion in Port Perry. The next day the fundraising Bowl For Kids 2000 event is to be held at local lanes in Port Perry and Uxbridge. "It's going to be a great night with food, drinks, cloggers, fiddlers, and a DJ, but we are having some trouble getting restaurants to come out and enter the competition," said Jodi Hewett, special _ events co-ordinator for the agency. In past years up to eight restaurants from across the region have vied for the rights of serving up the best wings, but so far only four establishments have con- firmed their entry into the competition. The Antrim House Pub, The Royal Canadian Legion (Port Perry), Sledheads and Soft-Tails, and Trader Sam's have all signed up to supply wings. Tickets for the evening, which begins at 8 p.m_, are $12 a person. "We've sent out invitations to other places and we're really hoping we get some Uxbridge restaurants as well... but there is so much going on right now that we understand it's going to be hard to get people to commit," said Ms Hewett. "But we're really hoping they come through for the wing competition because it's going to be a fun night, and it's for the kids." On Saturday, Feb. 5, the Big Brothers- Big Sisters of North Durham will host it's ninth annual bowling competition, the largest fundraiser of the year for the organization. Businesses, organizations and others are encouraged to form teams, collect pledges, and join in the fun. "Right now we're out there recruiting teams and getting trophies and prizes together; we're hoping to get another big turnout," said Mrs. Hewett. More than $16,500 was raised through the event last year. Participants are urged to pick up pledge sheets at either the Uxbridge Lanes or Centennial Lanes in Port Perry. The event will begin at | p.m. on Feb. 5, and run through to 7 p.m. For more information on the activities, to enter the wing competition or pur- chase tickets, or to pick up a pledge sheet, please contact the Big Brothers- Late night arrest results in dope charge for man Durham Regional Police arrested an Uxbridge man earlier this week after he was found to be in possession of a small quantity of marijua- na.
