"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, October 10, 2001 - 21 MoJacks push win total to three Port Perry shuts down Merchants with 5-0 victory By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star The Port Perry MoJacks climbed back into the win col- umn Sunday night at the Scugog Arena after running into a couple of deep potholes earlier in the week. The Mojacks were full marks for a 5-0 whitewash of the arch-rival Little Britain Merchants, helped in no small way by a fine performance in the nets by rookie goaltender Matt Balser who recorded his first shutout in the Central Junior C Hockey League. Coming off back-to-back losses to Lakefield and Uxbridge, the MoJacks' victory over the Merchants .er- tainly put a smile on the face of head coach Neil Evans, who said afterwards the players did exactly what he asked them to do. "I told them (before the game) that they had to be focussed and they had to play with a lot of discipline. They did that. And this was the first game we were able to put all three periods together. "This team took a big stride forward tonight," he con- tinued. "We played 60 minutes of disciplined hockey." After starting the season with two straight wins over Bobcaygeon and Georgina, the Mojacks took two on the chin, losing to the Chiefs in Lakefield 6-2 and then 6-3 Friday night in Uxbridge at the hands of the defending League champions. Against the Bruins, the Mojacks actually got off to a quick start with a 2-0 lead in the first period on power play markers by Darryl Steele. But it was a slippery downhill slide from that point on as the Bruins stormed back to tie things before the end of the first. After a scoreless middle period, the Bruins broke things wide open in the final frame with four goals, three of them on their vaunted power play. Matt Harris added the Mojacks' final tally in the third period, but by then the game was pretty much out of reach. Coach Evans said the team made what he described as "a lot of rookie mistakes" in the loss to the Bruins, but he hopes it was a learning experience that won't happen next time the squads meet. Shaun Curran went down with an injury in the Bruin game, and it's not known just how long the bruised ribs will keep him out of the lineup, but he did not suit up for the Little Britain affair. Prior to Sunday's match with the Merchants, Evans told the players they would have to show a lot of discipline and concentrate on defensive coverage inside their own blue line. And that's exactly what the MoJacks did, he stat- ed. On more than one occasion, the MoJacks turned their backs on efforts to goad them into penalties or a scrap. Justin Bennett staked them to a 1-0 lead late in the first, but it was the second frame in which the MoJacks slowly took control of the match with three unanswered goals. Ryan McQuade popped a couple of them, with assists to Neil Sluman and Nathan Cotter with two each. And late in the third, after the MoJacks had weathered a seven-minute Merchant power play, Andrew Mercer put the final nail in the visitors' coffin off a setup from Tyler Cameron and Dane Grey. During that long Merchant power play, the Mojack penalty killers worked effectively to keep the puck to the outside, and on the couple of occasions when the cover- Turn to Page 22 League, tournament champions SUBMITTED PHOTO The Progressive Electric and Plumbing squad Tournament Championship recently.
