A i ---- "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Patients could feel cash crunc From Page 1 the memo, "LHC is in a deficit position... three exercises are currently underway to deal with the deficit." In addressing rumours that "the Durham Regional Cancer Centre is taking money out of hospital funds," Mr. Lemon stated in part, "it is a fact that there is a clear link between the Cancer Centre and the redevelopment plans for Lakeridge Oshawa. That link ensures LHO's future as a prime facility for patient care." As for operating funds being used to shore up capital building costs, Mr. Lemon was firm in the memo. "No operating funds are being used for hospital construction," he stated in the memo. However, in the tele- phone interview, Mr. Lemon did state that bud- get cuts could include cuts to patient services in all the Lakeridge sites, includ- ing Port Perry and Uxbridge. "There are no other areas to make cuts," Mr. Lemon said, when ques- tioned whether patients might feel the bite of the operating deficit. "I can only say that any cuts made will be made on an equal basis at our vari- ous sites." The Ministry of Health has yet to make any formal news release on the scope on their review at Lakeridge. Extra funding can be found for bridge, councillors agree From Page 1 aggressive and competi- tive tendering and lower interest rates. Mr. Postill explained that funding the project through the Community Enhancement Funds -- which are made up of the township's share of the proceeds from the slot machines at the Great Blue Heron casino on Scugog Island -- would affect his fleet budget in 2002. He continued to explain that increasing the township's debenture to nearly $1.1 million include the extra funds (the town- ship is looking to secure a loan which will cover the costs of rebuilding Coulcliff Blvd. in Port Perry and fixing the bridge) would see the annual repayment cost rise by about $22,000 per year to about $135,000 annually. As well, Ward 2 Councillor Marilyn Pearce, who also sits as chair of the finance committee, noted that the township may even reap the bene- fits of lower interest rates which could possibly keep the annual pay- ments at their original lev- els of close to $110,000. Any extra money need- ed to pay off the loan each year would come out of the casino funds, she added. "The way the Community Enhancement Fund is going | think we could include an extra $22,000 a year for the debenture... I don't think that's too onerous. "We're putting people in danger again if we don't do this. We've got the money, it's not a heavy burden for us. Let's increase the debenture to $1.1 million and get it done," said Councillor Pearce.
