"Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 2, 2001 - 9 New initiative will see police, students team up together KOPS program introduced to local schools this fall By Rik Davie Port Perry Star Cops are going back to school in a big way here in North Durham. K.O.PS. (Kids and Officers, Partners in Schools) is a new initiative being headed up by Durham Regional Police Constable Brad Durst and a team of officers who want to join with kids to make schools a fun and safe place to be. The program will be a wide ranging one that expands on the already hands-on approach to schools taken by North Durham officers. As part of the K.O.PS. program, an officer will be given the job of communi- ty liaison officer with a family of elementary schools. That officer will begin a three-year rota- tion that will see the same cop working with kids in the school on street-smart initiatives, traffic safety, drug cwvareness and a myriad of other programs including the VIP program that has run successfully in North Durham for many years. After a tour in the ele- mentary schools the offi- cer will then move (along with many of the students) to high school where he will again work with kids who know their officers on a personal level to work towards safety and crime awareness at a secondary school level. According to Const. Durst, there will be a full community service team beyond just the officers in the schools. "We will have a youth crime officer who can work with kids and schools where there are prob- lems," Const. Durst said. "There will be SET teams (Special Enforcement Teams) that can target trouble areas or potential trouble and work at a street level to make our schools safer places for our kids to be." The campaign will begin with a colour poster that will include local stu- dents and the officers that will be part of the K.O.PS. program and other pro- jects already in the works. "I hope to get the (Canadian Auto Association)-sponsored Safety Patrol program up and running and | would like to see a renewal of the Block Parent Program here," Const. Durst said.
