"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Juno Award winner to play here in Scugog on Saturday night Ken Hamm to play in Greenbank The Greenbank Folk Music Society will kick off their ninth season this Saturday evening by pre- senting award-winning artist Ken Hamm. ° Mr. Hamm is one of Canada's foremost inter- preters of traditional roots and blues music. Since 1978, when he began touring solo, he has won a wide following for his stellar guitar work on both acoustic and steel- body National, as well as for his original songs that reflect his rural west coast life. In 1991 Hamm was awarded a Juno for best roots and traditional CD ("Saturday Night Blues" compilation CD) and was nominated three years running (1978, 1979, 1980) as best acoustic blues gui- tarist by North America's "Guitar Player" magazine. In 1997 he was nominat- ed as the Best Acoustic Act of the Year by the Toronto Blues Society and was a featured performer at the Montreal Jazz Festival. In 1999 the Toronto Blues Society again nomi- nated Hamm as Best Acoustic Act of the Year, as well as nominating his CD "Galvanized" as Best Recording of the Year. He was also a headliner at the Barrie Jazz and Blues Festival. But beyond the awards and well earned praise he has garnered, the most impressive thing about Hamm's music is how he is able to make the music he plays his own. When you see Ken Hamm in concert, it is obvious that he has absorbed, arranged and restated traditional blues and roots music and made it current and original. His ability to accompany him- self with driving and intri- cate slide and acoustic guitar completes the mix. The music fits him like old work clothes that have been shaped by his labour in the woods af BC, his time living on the Culf Islands and his honest and direct character. Hamm was raised in Thunder Bay, Ontario and began his musical pursuits as a teenager by listening to old country and blues recordings at the local folk record store. The propri- etor, recognizing his inter- est and intent, encouraged him, and let him hang around listening to Leadbelly, Robert Johnson, Son House, Skip James, Willie Dixon, Big Bill Broonzy and other blues greats for days on end. After playing in local bands and performing in coffee houses around Thunder Bay, Hamm began travelling the folk circuit performing in venues ranging from house concerts to concert halls to major festivals. Hamm moved to the West Coast in 1982 and has continued to write from his experience as a fisherman and rural observer. His songs reflect the land he loves and the lives of the people that live there without being sentimental or overstated. The show will begin at 8 p.m. at the Greenbank Hall. Tickets are $16 each and are available at Jayson Callan Music in Port Perry and Blue Heron Books in Uxbridge. To reserve tickets or for more information, please call 905-985-8351 or 905- 852-7578. .
