Wally Nesbitt From Corner Five Norwood's Derek Lynch celebrated the 'Drive of the Race' at Mosport Speedway"s OSLR event by going from the back of the 19 car Super Late Model field to the front as he claimed his second Mosport feature win in three starts. But the driver of the #15 Monte Carlo had to rely on some misfortune for his chief rival, Shane Maginnis, to accomplish the feat. From lap 20 until the 47th circuit, Maginnis and Lynch, circulated bumper to bumper at the head of the pack with the Dundas driver's #03 Grand Prix on the point. With three laps to the checkers, Maginnis suddenly slowed along the 800 foot long backstraight, allowing Lynch to assume the overall race lead. Lynch pow- ered on to take an eight car length victory, while Maginnis in his horrible sounding Pontiac held on for the runner-up position. "We changed spark plugs just before the race," explained Maginnis. "And we must have gotten a bad one in the set. It obviously blew apart and is laying out on the track somewhere." A trio of Mosport alumni rounded out the top five finishers with West Lee Talons in his 'Modified' #21 Corvette taking a well deserved third place. (Talons, winner of OSLR event the previous race at Kawartha Speedway, was involved in an early race incident that forced the Talons crew to remove most of the cars front body work). Port Perry's Grant Edwards, recovering from contact with Terry Robichaud's #38 Camaro on lap 22, claimed fourth place while Jamie Hale faded to fifth when the engine in the #37 developed a misfire. Derek Henderson (#17) and Bradford's Rick Brown (#44X) were the next in line to the stripe. The early part of the 50 lap headlining event featured not only multiple cautions (six yellows by lap 25, eight for the race), but a dominating performance by two- time Mosport Late Model champion, Brad Corcoran. Taking top spot on lap three, Corcoran (winner of two previous heat sprints) held onto the lead until the 15th circuit when he was outbraked and over- taken in turn three by Maginnis. Corcoran stayed in contention, running with the lead foursome, until the 34th tour when he retired the #50 with fading oil pressure. In the attrition-filled event, only 11 of the original 19 starters were able to take the checkered flag. The final Ontario Super Latemodel Racing series event will run on Sept. 14 at Kawartha Speedway, sharing the racing card with the ISMA Super Modifieds. Finesse Fishing By Chris Hockley Walkin' the Dog Bizarre name? Sure, but who thinks of names when you're catching fish? Especially aggressive hawgs that would think nothing of, if not take pride in, destroying any tackle that was attached to 'em. The Walkin' the Dog technique is not a new method of fishing, but it is extremely under utilized. With new tack- le on the market there is virtually no time or situation that you couldn't use this retrieve. The term "Walkin' The Dog" refers to the side-to-side motion that is incorpo- rated into a bait on the retrieve. This is done by making short twitches with spe- cially designed baits then allowing the line to go slack and repeating until your lure is back at the boat or shore. This side-to-side gliding motion just seems to really annoy fish into aggressive bites. Walkin' the Dog was made famous with the Zara Spook, a cigar shaped top water lure that has two dangling treble hooks off of the body of the lure. The Zara Spook is great around specific struc- ture areas like lily pads, stumps, even sunken rock shoals. The only drawback of this lure is the treble hooks. It can't be effectively fished over heavy cover and of course it is strictly a top water bait. There are many other baits on the market that you can impart this Walkin' the Dog technique into now. Mann's Ghost is a great example. This hollow- bodied top-water bait can glide over just about any cover. The most effective spots for this bait are the open areas in and around pads and thick top water matt. | even caught a decent size picker- el at two o'clock in the afternoon on a bright sunny day this year while Walkin' the Dog. Surprisingly, bass will aggressively hit this bait all day long. Just have a worm ready for a follow up bait in case of a missed hit. a Mann's Tailchaser is another unique bait. This hard-bodied bait is designed to Walk the Dog under water at any depth you let it sink to. This is a great bait for working weedlines for anything from pickerel to musky. Just hold onto your rod because the fish hitting this bait are going to try to hurt it... bad! Other lures that can be used for this retrieve are the Slug-o, Talkin' Spoon, Grass Rat, Mann's Rat and all other simi- lar lures. Don't be afraid to try different lures for this retrieve. Just be sure not to limit yourself by letting one day of success on one of these lures make you believe that it is the only one that will catch fish. Each one has it's own niche and by selecting the right lure with the condi- tions you will notice an incredible increase in the number of fish you catch. This technique is effective from the opener to the dogs days of August right through to fall. In fact the fall is perfect for this retrieve as the warm days and cool nights keep fish very reactive.
