"Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 28, 2001 - 1 AJ ® Shows will run from Aug. 29 to 31 at Town Hall 1873 North Durham Musical Theatre Camp to showcase talent The first Annual North Durham Musical Theatre Camp will showcase some of the future stars of musi- cal theatre when it pre- sents its end-of-camp shows Aug. 29 to 31 at Town Hall 1873 in Port Perry. The 21 students at the camp, from 'communities as far-flung as Bowmanville, Caledon and Beaverton, and ranging in age from 10 to 18, will, over the last two weeks of the summer, be taking 45 hours of classes in acting, dance and vocal technique from some of the best teachers in the province. They will also be rehears- ing for two different public presentations. On Wednesday, Aug. 29, they will present a variety show called The Camptown Follies. Each student, either solo or in pairs, will perform a dra- matic, dance or vocal piece during the evening. The students will also perform several pieces as an ensemble. In addition, the Follies will star as guest artists the camp's four fac- ulty members: acting teacher Anna MacKay- Smith of Uxbridge, vocal/dance teacher Cara Volchoff of the Randolph Academy in Toronto, artis- tic director Conrad Boyce of Uxbridge, and pianist Tamara Saringer of Uxbridge. "The Follies will be a wonderful array of talent, and a very entertaining evening," promises Boyce, who founded the camp * this year to provide more intensive training for the many promising young people who participate (or would lik. to participate) in community musical the- atre in Durham and area. The following two evenings, Aug. 30 and 31, the camp will present a full-length play, a charming musical version of the clas- sic children's novel, Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows. The Wind in the Willows concerns the adventures of a number of creatures who inhabit the English coun- tryside in the early part of the 20th century, including: the good-hearted Water Rat, the innocent and curi- ous Mole, the level-head- ed Otter, and the gruff but wise old Badger. What tests the animals' friend- ship is their concern for the arrogant, wily and some- what crazed Toad, an obsessive fellow given to sudden irrepressible whims, like stealing motor cars, careening and crash- ing them recklessly about the country, and then flee- ing the law. The friends' mission is to save Toad from himself, and then to help him reclaim his magnificent manor, Toad Hall, from the nasty weasels, ferrets and stoats who have laid claim to it' while the hapless Toad is in jail. "It's a very funny story," says Boyce, "with moments of furious action as well as great tendemess. And the music by Douglas Post is just wonderful, everything from haunting ballads to hard rock to celebratory calypso. It will be a won- derful evening for the - whole family." To illustrate the many points of the compass from which the camp has drawn Durham Regional Police issue warning to the public Take precautions with debit, credit cards During the last few weeks several citizens have reported to the Durham Regional Police Service unauthorized activity on their bank accounts and credit card accounts. This unauthorized activi- ty appears to be as the result of their information being stolen from their cards magnetic strip. The culprits are then counter- feiting these cards for their personal use. In the case of the debit cards the culprits are also obtaining the vic- tims PIN number. In almost all cases the data/information is being stolen when the cards are used at gas stations. Durham Regional Police are recommending that the public be cautious when using credit cards or debit cards. Always keep obser- vation of your card. Don't let it out of your sight.
