However, even the threat -- and arrival -- of rainy conditions didn't dampen the spirits of those who came out to Palmer Park in Port Perry to show their support for the local Rotary Club's annual fundraiser for area chil- drens' charities. "I can't believe that people hung in for us even through the rain," said Heather Haliburton-Smith, who spearheads the yearly event. And, despite the wet conditions, Aquarama 2001 netted the largest amount of funds in its nine-year history: $15,579. Teams arrived at Palmer Park on Sunday ready to race against the clock on personal water craft donat- ed by Port Perry Marina. The event sees teams of five riders make their way around the course set up on Lake Scugog, just off Palmer Park. Ms. Haliburton-Smith said that despite rain, the event was the most suc- cessful ever, with a total of 21 teams entered. Top honours for the fastest team went to Mike Morden, Grant Hooker, Jen Morden, Wayne Evans and Kent Johnson of the team Four Bouys and a Girl; Robert Allin collected the highest amount of pledges at $1,750; the most pledges were collected by the Rotary River Rats, who raised $2,130 and the best costume of the day belonged to Tammy Johnson, who dressed up as Tinker Bell. The most unusual ride was complet- ed by Brendan Agnew of the 'Bottoms Up' team.
