"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, August 8, 2001 - 27 "Organized by Alpha Racing to host crit and relay near Bethany second annual Devinci Dirt Crit & Relay, a two-stage mountain bike event to be held this Sunday (Aug. 12) near Bethany, 'is in the final stages of preparation. Alpha Racing, the event is com- prised of a cross-country criterium style race, fol- 'lowed by a team relay over a three-kilometer route. The race is open to riders of all levels and abilities, and the entire course is ideally positioned for spectators to enjoy watch- ing the riders take on the many course challenges. The key to the event is that all riders, regardless of ability, will feel wel- comed and will enjoy the experience. At last year's inaugural event, riders who had never entered a race before joined in with experienced and even pro-level riders for a great day of fun, sharing and laughter. New riders were elated at their accomplish- ments and support from the more experienced rid- ers. The elite riders took great pleasure in helping other riders, and enjoyed the more "laid back," less stressful day of riding. Devinci Bicycle of Canada and Bay Cycle of Pickering are the major sponsors for the event. Devinci and Bay Cycle have made available great prizes for heat and relay winners and draw prizes are available to all regis- trants. The event is a two- staged affair. For the first stage (the criterium), rid- ers are grouped into heats according to age, and race around a half-kilometer route of hills, mounds, banks, switchbacks, and ramps. After two or three laps, trailing riders are pulled out of the heat on every subsequent lap, until a final heat winner is determined. Once all the heats are completed, the event moves into the second stage - the team relay. For this stage, riders are placed on relay teams based on how they fin- ished in their respective heats. The intent is to pro- vide balance among the teams, so that riders of varying abilities are mixed together on each team. Riders then ride a three- kilometer route, with each team rider completing a number of laps in the relay format. For seasoned riders, there are ample thrills and "air time" as they fly through the half-kilometer special Dirt Crit section of the course. Less experi- enced riders can bypass the more challenging sec- tions, and travel around these sections to ride within their abilities. The Bethany race site is renowned as the best in Ontario from a spectator perspective. The entire Dirt Crit section can be viewed from a single van- tage point, and the three- kilometer route is within a - half-kilometer radius of the start for maximum access. The route is all off- road, which means no other vehicles to think about along the trails. - Address: ~ Phone: 'MyBidis:$ --------------- r Blackstock Teen Fund V x J x ilent €buction 4 Mult Day Passes to the Havelock Jamboree - min. bid $100 (valve $200.00) = > = -- = Blackstock Teen Fund Silent Eduction 4 Adult Day Passes to the Havelock Jamboree THis Is as close as youll get to Branson or Nashulle in Ohtario! By the time the game was over the Redmes. had clinched first and their high scoring captain had won his second scoring title. The Redmen shook off their bus legs very quickly as Peter Lough scored with just 37 seconds off the clock. Williams got his first of nine on the afternoon at the half-way point of the opening frame. The Thunder were propelled by a vocal home crowd and the fans were rewarded as the me team scored two goals in 13 sec- onds late in the first sending the teams off deadlocked at two goals: apiece. The first period score was not indicative of what was to come in the next two periods. By the time the third period had start- ed Shawn Williams had accumulated six points and had crept closer to the scoring title having trailed by 14 points at the beginning of the game and by eight with one period to play. The Thunder were determined on this night to salvage their season and act as spoilers and they scored with just nine seconds off the clock in the third to close the gap to 12-9. There were 19 goals scored in the final frame as the Redmen ran away with a 24- 14 win. This was good to allow them to clinch first place in the Major Series for the 2001 regular season.
