aad 12 - PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, August 8, 2001 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" CPTD officers' input would be welcomed, says Ward 2 rep From Page 1 "But there is more to it than even that. They look at such issues as traffic flow, placement of entrances and exits and layout of parking areas with public safety and law enforcement in mind." Councillor Pearce said she thinks Scugog Township should make use of the service as part of its 'overall planning process. "I think that certainly all commercial buildings should be looked at from this standpoint," Councillor Pearce said. "It is some- Ld thing that our health and safety committee could look into." Insp. Temple said he would like to work with the township planning depart- ments to make commercial areas safer. "We will meet with them whenever they want to and provide this service," Insp. Temple said. "The resi- dents of Scugog deserve to walk down the streets and through the parks safely and the use of CPTD offi- cers has proven itself in other areas of the region. Thisttype of preventative partnership with municipal For Super ead nl dge CHEVROLET OLDSMOBILE CADILLAC 852-3331 government is at the core of good crime prevention." If implemented, the CPTD review of all commer- cial building design could see developers have to meet minimum standards for safe building design and layout that make crime prevention the key ingredi- ent. Buildings in the south that conform to the CPTD plan are well lit, have few alcoves and bushes that allow for attackers to hide. Councillor Pearce noted that she intends to bring the plan before Scugog Council for discussion. 2 Great bb Come see Scugog's badly in need of rain, says Chief From Page 1 Chief Miller's forecast for this month. "Basically, things are going to con- tinue the way they are now," she said. "The temperatures are going to remain fairly warm and dry, with no major pre- cipitation in sight. "There are no big changes in the weather forecasted." That, however, is the type of predic- tion that has officials with the Ministry of Natural Resources worried. At the present time, most of Ontario -- from Lake Ontario to Cochrane and from Sault St. Marie to the Quebec border -- is listed under a high or extreme warning for potential fires. "This is the first time in memory that such a large chunk of the province is at a high or extreme warning for fire," said Dave Brown, a fire manage- ment supervisor with the MNR. "Usually during the summer we have chunks of the province that are under fire warnings, but this year almost half of Ontario is at risk." Drought-like conditions have led to extremely dry wooded areas and even lawns, said Mr. Brown. While Scugog Township doesn't fall under any provincial fire bans, Mr. Brown says the dry condition of the township is noted by the Ministry and he encourages residents here to hold off burning any materials if possible. "I would certainly caution anybody not to do any open air burning, to stay away from having a fire until we get some significant rainfall," he said. According to Mr. Brown, Scugog Township's conditions are similar to those in Frontenac County, where the fire index sat at 132 as of last Friday afternoon. Anything over 61 is consid- ered extreme and a potential fire haz- ard, he added. oim|D|mM|O|Z|O|® w|o|=|>»T|D|Mm|Z <|O|>» |r A i SS ------ LA GRAN Ti URISMO 3 RAND PRIX <~ MOSPORT What is it about Le Mans?
