16 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 5, 2001 "Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" Canoe The Nonquon raises more than $5,000 for museum Despite the threat of cold and rainy weather, close to 200 people showed up last Saturday morning to participate in the Canoe The Nonquon fundraiser. In total, 92 canoes and kayaks were entered in the 33rd annual event, and as of yesterday afternoon organizers noted that more than $5,000 had been raised for the Lake Scugog Historical Society. Money raised from the event is used to fund the Scugog Shores Historical Museum's operating budget, and is also used for special projects. "We had a phenomenal turnout consid- ering the weather projections," said Bruce Aikins, who organized the fundraising 'event. : "We were down slightly from last year in LOTS... terms of canoes and kayaks, but that is still double the amount we had the year before (in 1999). We're happy the weather held off; if we had of had better weather we could have surpassed our mark (in 2000)." As of Monday afternoon orgainzers were still tallying the final figures, but Mr. Aikins noted that the amount "should be in excess of $5,000. When all the numbers are calculated we should be within a couple hurdred dollars of last year's total." He also noted that all the participants and volunteers should be thanked for tak- ing part in the annual event. "Considering what the weather was call- ing for I think we were extremely fortunate. We have to thank all of those people who came out and took part."
