The issue came up Monday morning, when Mayor Doug Moffatt was reporting his trip last week to a municipal offi- cials' seminar in Alberta. The mayor told mem- bers of the finance and administration commit- tee that he met with Canada Post officials while at the Banff retreat, and informed them of the problems the township had using the new vote- by-mail system. The new system proved to be a big hassle for township officials when used for the first time last November. There were errors with the ballots and mailings, and the results of the election came much slow- er than originally expect- ed. Township clerk Kim Coates said she had dis- cussions with those responsible for the voter's list, and Ward 2 Councillor Marilyn Pearce questioned the total cost of the system. "What is the cost of the 2000 municipal election?" she asked. "We had extra staff working and all those problems... this thing was supposed to save us money, that's how it was sold. We weren't buying into it for the sake of spending more money with Canada Post." Ms Coates assured committee members that the cost of the election came in under budget, and noted that a final report is expected to be presented this month.
