"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 3, 2001 - 21 Mountain Bike season shifts into If you are a mountain biker, snow does not mean "no" when it comes to the opportunity to ride. So in spite of an unusually snowy and pro- longed winter, the orga- nizers of the upcoming Giant Five mountain bike race on' April 8 near Bethany are in high gear clearing the trails of snow up to three feet deep. With a snow blower working full time to cut paths through the snow, and volunteers on shov- els, organizers are pre- dicting an absolutely fan- Giant Five mountain bike. series commences Sunday in Bethany tastic, unique and chal- lenging ride. Commented volunteer Shaun Lunney, "This will be great, riding through banks of snow three feet either side of. you, as your pedals brush the banks. There are down hill sections that feel like you are in a bob- sled run. It is awesome." The Alpha Racing orga- nizers of the five race series have never encountered such a for- midable challenge to pre- pare for the first event of the season. According to one of the event organiz- ers, Josh Martyn, "We had to clear snow off the trails in our first race ever, five years ago, but the snow was not nearly as deep as it is this year. The snow blowing is formidable, but the riding experience makes up for all the work." Martyn went on to point out that with a little help from the weather, the trails should provide local riders with some of the first off-road, single track riding of the season. "We are cutting the snow down to the ground or the base packed snow and ice. Because there is no frost, the ground where we are blowing out the snow should be clear by race day," he noted. Local bike shop Cyclepath Peterborough is included among the many sponsors of this cit- .izen's event. As this is a sanctioned Ontario Cycling Association (OCA) recreational ride, anyone can ride. In fact, it is not unusual for first time off- road riders to take advan- tage of such events. The ages of riders vary, but Bruins trailing Chippawa in semifinal series For the first time in the 200!
