"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 3, 2001 - 17 Farmers still say feds need to fund agriculture From page 1 "It's like we're a drowning man; we're getting pulled closer to shore, but we're still not there yet." Financial support will be calculated using the farmers' historical yield average based on 2000 acreage. It is anticipated that each farm will receive about $4,500. "It's a step in the right direction; they're going in a positive direction, although there is noth- ing for the horticultural sector. They're the only ones left out, it's like they don't exist," said Mr. Barry. He expects some farmers to use the money to plant crops this spring, while others will use the cash to pay outstanding bills from the 2000 growing sea- son. As for their attempts to collect another $400 i million from: the federal government, the farming sector will continue with efforts to convince the ruling Liberals the money is needed. "We have to keep the pressure on them to make sure they under- stand that the ..extra funding is critical," said Mr. Barry, noting that a massive national phone campaign to all cabinet ministers will continue this week. "The government says they can't match U.S. subsidies dollar for dollar, but they can match it per capita. We get less than half of what (Americans) get on a per capita basis." Mr. Barry also took offense to recent com- ments in The Star by Durham MP Alex Shepherd, who said that the feds' $500 million cash infusion is all there is in the bank for the farming industry. "As an accountant, he knows that any money put into agriculture is an investment. All that money will roll through the economy, and it'll cost the government nothing," said Mr. Barry. "They should look at it not as a subsidy, but as an investment." Durham MPP John O'Toole lauded his gov- ernment's funding for Ontario's farmers. "Ontario has gone above and beyond its earlier commitment," Mr. O'Toole said in a press release. "However, we must still develop long-term solutions. | would urge the federal government to work with the provinces and farm organizations to bring forward a support sys- tem that allows farmers to compete on a fair playing field."
