McClelland Port Perry Star The Port Perry MoJacks may be down 2-0 in their best of seven Junior C playoff series with the Lakefield Chiefs. But they're not out, not by any means. . "The guys are still in very good spir- its," said MoJack head coach and GM Murray Parliament Sunday night after seeing his team drop a tough 4-0 deci- sion to the Chiefs at the Scugog Arena. "They are certainly not going to give up," he stressed, adding that the players would be encouraged to see a good crowd at the Scugog Arena this coming Friday night (faceoff 8:00 PM) when the teams meet in the crucial game four of this affair. Game three is this Tuesday evening at the Lakefield Community Centre. Even though they came out on the short end of the 4-0 score, Mojacks turned in a much more solid effort from start to finish than. game one where they squandered away a 4-1 lead early in the second period and wound up losing 10- 4. The head coach agreed the team played better in the 4-0 loss, "a full effort for 60 minutes." Penalties continue to haunt the MoJacks in the first two games of this series. The Chiefs own the best power play in the Central Junior C League and Sunday night they again employed it to full advantage, scoring their final two goals with a MoJack in the box. Jamie Mcintyre hit at 8:45 of the sec- ond to make the score 3-0, and Chief captain Darren Mahoney upped it 4-0 early in the third with Adam Jones sitting out for goaltender interference. The call on Jones late in the second period was one the MoJacks hotly dis- puted as Jones was attempting to play the puck and simply collided with Chief netminder Ryan Hogan. However, penalties (justified or not) taken against the Chiefs spell nothing but trouble with a capital T, as they move the puck crisply in the opposition zone and more often than not, look for their sniper Mahoney to get free in the slot where he's deadly. Other marksmen for the Chiefs in this one were defenseman Mike Kingdon in the first period and Chirs Rainey, anoth- er sniper of note, midway through the middle stanza. Mojacks were not without some excel- lent scoring opportunities of their own. Had they got a favourable bounce or two in the opening period, the complexion of the game might have been vastly differ- ent. MoJack captain Shane Norton and for- wards Ryan McQuade and Andrew Mercer all missed fine scoring chances when the match was still very much on the line. : Coach Parliament noted after the match that he was pleased to see the team stuck pretty much to their game plan throughout--namely to concentrate on defense in their own zone and cut the Chief scoring chances to a minimum. However, the best 'D' in the world will go for naught if you fail to put some pucks in the other guy's net, and this game marked the first time all season the MoJacks have been white-washed. While penalties played a key role in the final outcome, it was a clean game with just sevén minors against the MoJacks and eight by the visitors. Chiefs took the least number of penalty min- utes of the six teams in the Central League during the regular season and as MoJacks found out, they are none too shabby when it comes to killing off a man advantage. Game three is tonight (Feb. 20) at 8:00 o'clock in Lakefield and the series swings back to the Scugog Arena Friday night, also at 8:00. If MoJacks can prolong the series, game five is Saturday night in Lakefield at 8:00, and should a game six be need- ed it will be at the Scugog Arena on Sunday evening starting at 7 p.m. ~The Port Perry Panthers Midget boys team did extremely well at a recent tour- nament in Ottawa.
