Editorial Comment Relocate the site It would seem obvious that the concept of a skateboard park in downtown Port Perry is going to continue to get a rough ride. Merchants are staunchly opposed to the proposed location of the park, on a piece of land between Queen St. and North St. They cite a number of concerns, most particu- larly their feeling that the park, which would have ramps and other objects on which the kids could play with their boards, isn't in keeping with the character of downtown Port Perry. They're also worried about the safety of the children who will play there, and the noise and litter they feel the kids will generate. And they are so adamant in their opposition that the Business Improvement Area has assembled a petition, - signed by business owners who don't want to see the park built on the downtown site. ~ This rejection comes after another site fell through. The park was to be built at the corner of Water and Curts St. But that didn't happen, which meant a new site had to be targeted. : The alternate site for the park is near Scugog Arena, and it has its merits, and faults. On one hand, it's in an area that's established as the town's recreation centre, and such a park would blend in well. On the other, it's distant from the. downtown area, and not easily accessible to kids who don't drive. But so are the ball parks there, and the soccer pitches, and the arena itself. And all parents know that if kids want to: access a recreational site, they'll find a way to get there. The arena site is the most appropriate, and would meet with less opposition. It's the right site. / 77 77 ' ny, wl /, rd 7/7, TI, Zo - iy, - = A 1% { th Sa a iy 7 5S ( NRL A RN ty PY 3 //7 7. 2/11 4POOA PoRT PERRY STAR Port Perry Star Letter of the Week A beautiful place to call home To the Editor: My husband and I along with our sons moved to Scugog Island, Port Perry in the summer. We came from Toronto, did not know anyone except for our real estate agent Ralph Fairman, who has guided us in the most won- derful manrer, along with Ken Edwards our neighbour and friend, his wife Judy, along with a few other contractors from Port Perry, Bert from Reliable Plumbing, Rick Larocque our elec- trician, and finally The Port Perry Star. Every week I faithfully read your newspaper. You have guided us.with everything from places where to shop to news around our area, to even inform us when garbage pick-up happens, and most importantly, when there are special events around Port Perry. My family and | were used to being treated as strangers when EE ------ au iA living in Toronto, afraid of trusting anyone and most of all could not depend on anyone. We were tired of living in the middle of pollution and even though we had our own property we did not have any privacy. In Port Perry we found par- adise; no pollution, freedom and to top it up you have been a great help, taking into account we did not know where or who to go to. My family and | are extremely surprised at the fact that there are still a lot of nice, polite and respectful people around. To you and to all the people living in Port Perry, never stop being nice to strangers because that is what makes Port Perry even more beautiful and thank you for everything.
