10 - PORT PERRY 'STAR Tuesday, Beceniber 12. 2600 "Scugog's Cammiunity Newspaper of Cholce" Const. Dave Bryars lived in Port Perry Police community saddened by officer's death By Rik Davie Special to the Star The Scugog community and the Durham Regional Police Service lost a valued friend and colleague this week, when Const. Dave Bryars passed away sud- denly at the age of 43. The 22-year police veter- an was struck down sudden- ly at his Port Perry home last Thursday by what family members say was heart fail- ure complicated by an infection. Dave Bryars started with the Durham Regional Police Service in 1979 and after Completing training at the Ontario Police College, took on regular patrol duties. Part of that service was in Port Perry's 26 Division patrol area, and it was in Port Perry that he and wife 'Dice' (Dianne) made their home. Eventually, Const. Bryars' talents took him into anoth- er area of policing. "He was a precise guy, very precise," said Dice Bryars of her husband. "When he got his tea he was adamant that the bag must be taken out before the milk could be put in. "I always found it amus- ing that he could spot an expired license plate sticker two or three cars ahead of us in traffic, but he could never find the ketchup in the Directory o Coming Events Blackstock Women's Institute Aerobics Gentle - Mondays - 1 p.m. - Blackstock United Church; Tuesdays - Low Impact - 7:30 p.m. Blackstock United Church: Thursdays - Low Impact - 7:30 p.m. Nestleton Hall. Bryars to nearly 10 years with the force's Forensics Identification Unit. A diagnosis of diabetes cut short his work with FIU, and the need for a more regulated work life brought Const. Bryars to a job in the criminal courts. That assign- ment put him in daily con- tact with many members of the police service, the media and some of the toughest criminals to pass through Durham Region. For many hundreds of people who pass through the court buildings in the region, Const. Bryars' was often the first face they saw. He dealt with first-timers as well as the seasoned veter- ans of the court hallways with the same professional manner, mixed with good- humoured direction. For crime reporters in the area, he was sometimes the first contact they made on Monday mornings, and the last guy they talked to on Friday aftemoon. Family friend Joy Webb said, "he loved his job, and he was very proud of what 905-404-5254 15 Years Service he did. He was a great guy and a prince." Const. Bryars had a keen interest in computers he indulged in off-duty hours, but another interest took first priority for him. When he was at home, Dice Bryars said their two children Kevin, 17 and Ashley 15, were always his focus. "He spent a lot of time with them in the pool and if the kids decided that they wanted a slushy from (the store) at midnight, Dad would take them," Mrs. Bryars said. "He gave them all the time he could." Mrs. Bryars said that she and her family want to thank the Durham Regional Police Service for the immediate support they were shown. "I needed something; they did it," Mrs. Bryars said. "The liaison people have been wonderful." Services for Const. David Bryars are being held today (Tuesday, Dec.12) at | p.m. at Low and Low Funeral Home, 1763 Reach St. in Port Perry.
