8 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 7, 2000 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice' Christmas parade is Nov. 25 Chamber decides on new route for Santa By Chris Hall Port Perry Star The road to Santa's Village will be a bit short- er this year. After much discussion, organizers of the annual Port Perry Santa Claus Parade have opted to shorten Old St. Nick's annual trip through the downtown area when he makes a return visit on Nov. 25. This year Santa will complete his journey at the Latcham Centre, where his village and elves will be waiting for him. "We've changed the route again this year" said Ray Northey, who will be co-ordinating the YW A winner each and every ) | week until Christmas!" event on behalf of the Scugog Chamber of Commerce. "Instead of returning to the (Port Perry) fair- grounds like we have in the past, we've moved Santa's Village to the Latcham Centre." The parade, which will begin at 2 p.m, starts at the fairgrounds and will travel across Reach Rd. to Simcoe St., then turn south. From there it will continue on to Queen St., then turn east and travel through the downtown core before ending at the Latcham Centre, at the foot of Queen. In past years, the pro- cession has wound its way through downtown Port Perry before return- ing to the fairgrounds. That resulted in a lengthy, and sometimes confusing, parade route. "One of the reasons we made some changes this year is because the bands are booking three and four parades each day, and their scheduling is really tight," said Mr. Northey. "In the past they've wanted to leave right in the middle of a parade to get to the next one, so . contact Mr. Northey at * SAME PLACE * SAME GREAT SERVICE! (905) 985-8469 what's the point (of a long route)?" He also reasoned that the most recent route was somewhat lengthy and "a little tedious". As well, the potential for inclement weather also made the decision to shorten the procession an easy one, said Mr. Northey. For 2000, the annual parade will try to tie into the "Old Fashioned Christmas" theme which the local BIA is promot- ing, said Mr. Northey. "In the past we've had about 60 floats and bands, about 52 floats and eight bands," he A splashy launch for Fresh RATRRY I 1% 2EA%- said.
