DOUG HARRIS The most pressing issue right now would be the amalgamation and how we would deal with it. | am strongly, very strongly for having a second ice pad and a pool. We need to encourage indus- tries and businesses to set up shop in Port Perry. We need to educate locals and tourists to help Lake Scugog clean and safe. | will bring youth, new ideas and compassionate views about our municipality. MARILYN PEARCE The amalgamation issue is of paramount importance and will require a thorough analysis. Amalgamation will directly affect our level of service for arenas, roads, pools, parks, libraries and planning. | think as a community we must argue in favour of a model that allows some local decision making on issues that affect our quality of life especially planning, roads and recreational services. | believe recreation is an essen- tial service. | originally ran for coun- <il in order to see our parks and playgrounds upgraded, our lake- front revitalized, baseball diamonds, tennis courts, soccer fields and field-houses constructed, trails built. I will continue to support expansion of our facilities. Funding options for a pool and second ice pad have never been better - the window of opportunity is here. Lake Scugog"s well being is under numerous jurisdictions and ministries. Locally we can make our planning decisions i.e. subdivision approvals, re-zonings, industrial/ commercial use based on good environment strategies that would protect our wetlands, minimize impacts on shorelines and control excess runoffs directly to the lake. We should encourage naturaliza- tion of existing shoreline. Diversification of the tax base with the growth of new commercial and industrial sites. To relieve the residential tax burden, council would either have to approve more commercial plazas or increase resi- dential housing, as finding a work- force for the existing factories is already a problem for local employ- ers. Tourism is still a growth indus- try and we should encourage inten- sification of our commercial core. | bring a great deal of municipal experience to the council table - six years as a Ward councillor and three years as a Regional Councilor, and two years as chairman of the Lake Simcoe Conservation. | have a B.A. in geography from the University of Western Ontario, and understand the planning, environmental and economic issues of this community. | have lived here for 15 years because of small town quality of life. PETER UTNANS | believe that the most impor- tant issue facing Scugog Township is amalgamation. This has to be done right. How can it be possible for people in big cities to make intelligent decisions for us who live in a small town? How will the tax structure change? How will our property taxes be affected? What can we do to stop this from hap- pening? We need people in coun- cil who won't give up the fight. As for municipal services, Scugog Township falls short. Our town needs more recreational facilities, especially for the youth. Why can't we come up with the property the youth needs to build their skateboard court. They have done their part in raising the funds now it's time for the town to do its part. We could better alleviate the tax burden on property owners by the introduction of more industry into Scugog Township. Scugog Township should be a place that industry is attracted to. We should introduce some incentives to get industry excited about locating into Scugog Township. Unanswered lam a listener. | care about what people have to say. I'm also not afraid to speak my mind and let people know where | stand. | bring many years of experience in com- mercial and residential renova- tions. | am able to come up with more than one solution to a prob- lem and as a business man | am always concerned about costs. | want to be on the winning team Candidates for Ward 3 Councillor - Scugog Township Municipal restructuring will need to be dealt with soon. We need to present a workable plan to satisfy the province, before the province dictates a restructuring plan that the citizens may not like. Both facilities are needed in Scugog. There should be a con- struction plan in place before the end of the next term of council. | would prefer to invest money in a full indoor pool facility, than spend money on an outdoor facility just to say that something is better than nothing. What is needed is an aggres- sive marketing plan to invite ware- housing and distribution centres to the Port Perry employment lands between the 6th Concession and Regional Road 8. These type of uses require very little water and sewer services that are not avail- able in that location, as well they will not have much of a negative impact on the neighbouring areas. We need to continue to be vigi- lant in reducing the impact of lake- side development. The Scugog Official Plan and the Kawartha Conservation Authority has policies in place so the township has some form of control over 30m from the shoreline in all new lakeside devel- opments. The Millennium shoreline group is doing great work in helping restore existing developed shore- line. JIM McMILLEN The most pressing issue fac- ing Scugog Township will be that of amalgamation and restructuring of local government. It will be up to the new council to work toward achieving this and at the same time reducing costs and maintain- ing our quality of life. It will be up to the Director of Parks and Recreation to present to council reports on each of the requests. If it is shown that there is substantial demand for the request and it will not add unreasonable operating costs to the township, it should be supported by council. We must continue to promote the township as much as possible to attract business and also main- tain our support of our existing commercial and industrial areas. The Millennium Shoreline Project is addressing many of these concerns and will be encouraged and supported by council. We also need to continue to pressure the provincial govern- ment for answers on our environ- mental concems. Also, continued support for the Kawartha Conservation Authority is neces- sary As a regular attendee at council for over five years | am aware of the issues. | am a director on the Durham Region Tourist Assoc., as well as a director on the MoJacks Jr C hockey club. | have volunteered with many groups, including the Scugog Chamber of Commerce, the second ice pad committee, and the skateboard park group. In 1998, the township recognized me for my vol- unteer efforts. | intend to bring a youthful voice to the council table. The next council will require an experienced team of people with managerial and analytical skills.
