Volunteers gathered just north of the Epsom Church on Saturday morn- ing (Oct. 21), when 34 acres of soybeans were harvest- ed in a field on Scugog Line 8. Another 12 acres will be collected later from a field on Scugog Line 6. The effort, which has gone on for more than 15 years here in the Scugog- Uxbridge area, is spear- headed by members of the Epsom-Utica Church and other volunteers in the sur- rounding communities. While the crops were a little late in being planted during the cold and wet spring, the crops have matured nicely, says volun- teer Don Asling. The entire 45 acres will be harvested over the next few days and delivered to Reesor's Elevators, where they will be dried and stored. They will then be used to make soybean oil, which will be shipped overseas to help the hungry around the world. In the past, local efforts to support the Canadian Foodgrains Bank have seen volunteers bag corn in the Uxbridge area and grow corn of their own, most recently on a rented piece of property on Reach Rd. just west of Epsom. g This will be the second ARS PS RN Hats Re VIAN Ta Pp ig * 79 bs: Ld . ie. The group rents both fields; the Scugog Line 8 field is leased out by Allan Powell, while the property on Line 6 is owned by Allan and Brenda Bailey. The soybean seeds were donated by Alvin Brooks. "The (Epsom-Utica) Church helps out, but we're not the only ones involved. People come from all over to help out; they just call and say they're going to show up with their com- bines or trucks and come to help out," said Mr Asling. He expects close to a dozen people from Epsom, Utica, Port Perry, Greenbank, Uxbridge, Manchester and Leaskdale to show up to help harvest both fields.
