"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 17, 2000 - 23 MoJacks host Little Britain on Sunday From Page 22 Matt Keating. Just 70 sec- onds later, Dan Carey ripped a wrist shot through the wickets to make it 3-1 and, at 8:15, Sam McCullum scored on a power play with a shot from the right boards that seemed to catch Poole off balance. Down 4-1, the MoJacks refused to roll over and some hard work in the Chief's zone paid off at 15:57 when the high scor- ing Whitworth slapped a big rebound into a gaping net as the Chiefs were killing off a penalty. But that was all the green and white could muster as the Chiefs shut them down for the 4-2 victory. In Little Britain the pre- vious night, the MoJacks got their second win of the season (against one tie and three losses) when Whitworth completed his hat trick midway through the five-minute overtime period. He was set up by Matt MacMaster and Nathan Cotter for the game winner. The game probably should never have gone to OT as the MoJacks were cruising along late in the third with what looked like a comfortable 7-4 lead. However, a string of penalties led to three Merchant goals late in the game, two by Jeremy Farr and one by Steve Gourlie to send the game into the extra inning and Whitworth's dramatic win- ner. Team captain Shane Norton continues to put points on the board as he collected a goal and three assists against the Merchants. Other marks- men in this one were Ryan McQuade, Shawn Curran, Adam Jones and Jeremy Ritchie. Curran had two helpers as well. Rookie Jeff Rankine got the start in the cage for the MoJacks and turned in a solid effort as five of the Merchant markers came on the power play. Defenseman Jeff Ashton was hit with a two-game suspension for a major checking-from-behind penalty in the second period. He missed the game against the Chiefs and this coming Tuesday's encounter with those same Chiefs in Lakefield. It will be out of the fry- ing pan into the fire for the MoJacks as they travel to Lakefield this Tuesday evening (Oct. 17) for a return match with the Chiefs who are even tougher in their own build- ing with its small ice sur- face and tight corners. And this coming Sunday, hockey fans will see a couple of long-time rivals as the Little Britain Merchants pay a visit to the Scugog Arena. You can bet the Merchants will be looking for a bit of revenge for the OT loss to the MoJacks this past week- end. Faceoff for round two is 7 p.m. at the Scugog Arena.
