Why, Toejam, of course By Chris Hall Port Perry Star After a teaching career that spanned more than 30 years, Dwayne Darlington is still trying to make learning fun. While he retired from teaching English, history, geography and art at R.H. Cornish Public School in Port Perry two years ago, Mr. Darlington is continu- ing his work in the educa- tion field. Over the past year, the Prince Albert man has worked on penning a poetry book for younger students, those between the ages of eight and 13 who are too old for nursery rhymes, but too young for mature and in-depth materials. The result? Toejam and Other Poems. "What | was looking to do upon retirement was writing primarily for junior and intermediate stu- dents. | wanted to create a kids' book of poetry," said Mr. Darlington. The book, which con- tains 37 poems written in a wide variety of styles, was completely written and illustrated by Mr. Darlington. It took him just over 10 months to com- plete. He has introduced the book to his former colleagues, and a group of students in Grades 7 and 8. "I got a good reaction from all of them," said Mr. Darlington, who said that he would like to approach the Durham District School Board regarding use of his book as an edu- cational tool. He would also like to conduct some poetry-writing workshops for kids. "When | was writing it | really tried to think about what interests kids, things that catch their imagina- tions, and play with some of their ideas... food, Dawyne Darlington of Prince Albert is the author of Toejam and Other Poems. NuTrRITION PROS* What Are We Drinking? by Lisa St. John R.D While we may not think the beverages we consume contribute to our overall nutnton, they can make a signif- "icant difference. One trend that is continual increase in the intake of soft drinks and decline of milk intake. To take a look at statis- tics, while these figures are based on the US | itis believed that Canada is not far behind. The average overall soft drink intake in 1977 was approximately 375 12 oz. cans per year vs almost 600 cans per year in 1997. These trends are also very evident with teens, at times when increasing bone density is very important. Some factors that effect what we drink 1s the increasing social trend towards the number of meals that are eaten away from home and the choices we make when eating out. Also is the fact that many schools are using soft drinks vending machines for fundraising. It is estimated that schools in which soft drinks are sold, milk intake 1s 30 per cent lower Consider beverages as part of your daily nutrition. Let's strike a balance between nutrient dense and non-nutrient dense beverages when eating at home, out, or at school For more information send questions to Box 5283 Port Perry or call 983-6946 By Nutntion at Work a group of Port Perry Dietitians providing individual and group counselling This message sponsored by 0000000000000 0000000 5 pf Car Wash ADEN CER EOI TS EVERY TUESDAY with gas purchase Brought to your by your Independant FULL Service Station 4 * * * : 2 : Sunys © ~ OPEN 24 HOURS - ® 000000000000 00000000 Haunted Village returns to museum The Haunted Village has returned to Scugog Shores Museum.
