-- --------. 12 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 19, 2000 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Greg Banting receives Borelians' Parkes Award By Chris Hall Port Perry Star For his dedication to the Borelians theatre group over the past decade, Greg Banting has received the 2000 Les and Zona Parkes Award. The presentation was made Thursday evening (Sept. 14). during the Borelians' open house and registration night at Town Hall 1873. Mr Banting received the award for his continuing support of the local the- atre group; said Borelians' president Dave Ellis. "He's been there for us, helping out on the stage, behind it and off it," .said Mr. Ellis. "He generally loves theatre and is a very good part of our group." A Scugog resident for We want your input for our & PLAN TO the past 22 years, Mr Banting joined the Borelians more than a decade ago, after reading that the local theatre group planned to produce The Glass Menagerie in 1990. "I had never been on stage before that," said Mr. Banting, who works as an English teacher at a Scarborough high school. "But, as a teacher I've taught that and I love that play, so | thought I'd go ahead and try out." Mr. Banting landed a role in the production, and soon became a mem- ber of the Boreljans, a group whose future was sketchy at the time because of low member- ship. Over the years, he has played various characters on stage in seven plays, ATTEND! 2001 Community Events SCUGOG CHAMBER 269 Queen St., Port RCE and volunteers his time behind the scenes when not taking on any roles. He has been the group's secretary and vice-president, and is cur- rently treasurer. He has also produced shows, and done lighting. "I think I've done everything except for directing," said Mr. Banting. Mr. Ellis said Mr. Banting's contribution as treasurer has been invalu- able. "I've kind of got every- thing up to date," said Mr. Banting, who also has a background in accounting. "] got things a little more organized and systemat- ic... 1 cleaned it up a little." Mr. Banting professed a deep fondness for The Borelians. "This is a wonderful group; there is not an ego problem or an attitude problem here. The people in this group enjoy the- atre, and fom re = ---- they __enjoy S1ONCINGOr putting on a good show," Mr. Banting said. "We put together some incredible plays with our incredible actors, and the town, the township, really shows us their support. That we get people out to each and every one of our shows is the public's way of thanking us for our hard work." While they now live in Courtice, Les and Zona Parkes will forever be a part of The Borelians, a group they helped estab- Itsh. "There have been a lot of great people in the group, and a lot of great ones have won this award in the past. Look at this list," said Mr. Banting, pointing to a long list of names on the plaque. "These are all people who were really respected for their work in communi- ty theatre.
