---- A 8 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 12, 2000 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Terry's Team member set to run for a cure By Rik Davie Special to the Star What do you think you would hate most about having cancer? The answers seem obvi- ous, don't they? For most of us, the very word - cancer - strikes fear. For many more it brings painful memories of. loved ones lost. ~ For Jeff Blair, a 14-year- old member of Terry's Team in this year's Terry Fox Run, the answer is dif- ferent. Jeff said the view people have that he is somehow limited by his illness both- ers him the most. "People always seem to think I'm limited, that I can't do things," he said. "I can do anything, and it bugs me when people think I can't." Jeff travels each summer to a camp for kids fighting cancer, Camp Oochigeas. It is there he meets the peo- ple with whom he can relate. "When you are there, all your buddies have had it (cancer) and they under- stand," Jeff said. "They get it. No one thinks you're lim- ited, and everybody is the same." It is a welcome break for Jeff, and one he looks for- ward to. Someday, he says, he may be a counselor to help other youngsters, but until then he helps where he can. His disease is in remis- sion, but that was not always so. When he partici- pated in his first Terry Fox Run in Port Perry, he had to be carried. Not now. Even with the onset of normal teen angst, Jeff Blair prepares for the annual fundraiser for cancer research by contacting everyone he knows for sponsorship. Jeff usually exceeds $1,000 in pledges, and does his bit for the cause. "l can't go into a lab and do research, but I can do this and it helps," he said. The run, which begins in Palmer Park on Sept. 17 with an 8 a.m. registration, raises money to honour the memory of Terry Fox, who lost his personal battle with cancer part way through his cross-Canada Marathon of Hope. He plans to participate in the Terry Fox Run Sunday, Sept. 17. effort. All current patients or survivors of cancer, they represent the goal of the Fox Run. About a dozen people in this area have consented to be Terry's Team members, acting as local ambassadors in the fight against cancer. Terry's Team members will be on hand when the run is held Sunday, and hope that even those not running will come to the park and sign a dedication board to those lost to can- cer, or who are currently battling it. Jeffery Blair will be there, and in many ways that in itself is a huge victo- ry for the cause of Terry Fox. There's still time to par- ticipate in the Terry Fox Run. Pledge sheets are available at businesses throughout town.
