8 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 15, 2000 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Local youths are Syl Apps Award winners By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Two Blackstock teens were rewarded for their community involvement, leadership, and athleti- cism last week during a special ceremony marking the presentation of the inaugural Syl Apps Award of Excellence. Alex McLaughlin, 18, and 15-year-old Kurtis Wager are among 16 young Ontarians scheduled to receive the award. It was recently introduced by the provincial government in an effort to recognize, and reward today's youth for involvement within their communities. The young men were presented with certificates during a special ceremony held last Thursday (Aug. 10) at the Scugog munici- pal offices in Port Perry. The award is in honour of Charles Joseph Sylvanus Apps, known by many as Syl Apps. Perhaps best known as a star centre and captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Syl Apps was also a Canadian and Commonwealth Games pole-vault champion; a member of Canada's Olympic team, and Ontario's Athletic Commissioner. He was also a member of the Ontario Legislature for 12 years, representing the Kingston Region where he served as the Minister of Correctional Services. Kurtis Wager was selected as Central Region Junior, while Alex McLaughlin was the 2000 Central Region Senior. "I was a bit surprised by it, but I'm glad I've had the opportunity to take part in my community and be involved. This year was a lot of fun, and it's great to be part of this, the first year of the award. It's momentous," said Mr. McLaughlin, a graduate of Cartwright High School who will heading to London next month to begin his post-secendary career at the University of Western Ontario, where he will study business. A past Deputy Prime Minister of the student council at CHS, Mr. McLaughlin was involved with several clubs at the school, as well as golf and ski clubs. He is also cur- rently the summer camp co-ordinator at the Cartwright Youth Activity Centre this year. . He was nominated for the award by Tracey Prinzen, a volunteer at Brock Township's youth centre. The first-ever presenta- tion of the Syl Apps Award IS "an appropriate way to mark the achievement of youth in our communities across the province," said Durham MPP John O'Toole. "It recognizes the strong links between com- munity service, leader- ship, and volunteerism." Scugog Mayor Doug Moffatt also congratulated the young men, making note that Scugog is the only township to boast two winners. "Both are Cartwright High School students; people are always saying that it's the smallest high school in the province and that it's not big enough, but I think this is enough evidence that our small school has great spirit and fine, fine outstanding citi- zens. | think this really proves it."
