IL AEE oi LR oa "Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 15, 2000 - 3 Aquarama arrives Rotary fundraiser set to go on Port Perry's waterfront this weekend -- By Chris Hall Port Perry Star The Port Perry Rotary Club is hoping to make another big splash this weekend when the eighth annual Aquarama fundrais- er is held just off the shores of Palmer Park this Sunday. The event is held each year to raise money for Easter Seals and other chil- drens' charities. Aquarama organizers are planning on the 2000 edition of the event to be the best ever, continuing a tradition of success established over the past seven years here in Scugog Township. At last count, a record 19 teams had registered for this weekend's fundraiser. which event chair Heather Haliburton-Smith attribut- es to Aquarama's growing popularity. "It's really, really grown over the years, it's very popular now," she said. "It's always exciting for everyone who participates -- and those watching as well -- but it's for the kids, that's what this is all for Every penny we get is for the kids." Riders last year raised more than $15,000, which helped put the fundraiser over $50,000 in only seven years. With a record num- ber of teams participating this year, organizers are excited over the potential for the 2000 edition "It looks like we're going to have a really good turnout this year, the inter- est has been great," said Mrs. Haliburton-Smith The event sees riders board a personal water craft and make their way around a triangular course set out just off the shores of Kinsmen Beach while being timed Each team consists of five nders The SeaDoos, gas, life jackets, and personnel will once again be donated by Port Perry Marina owner John Mackey. As always, prizes, tro- phies, and medals donat- ed by local businesses will be awarded at the end of the day for the fastest team time, fastest individual time, highest individual pledges collected, highest team pledges collected, slowest ride, most unusual ride, and best costume. Each participant will receive a T-shirt and a prize. Riders are required to turn in their pledges (a minimum of $75) prior to the race during registration times, which will be held from 9:30 am. to Il a.m. on Sunday. Practice times are also available during that time. The races begin at 11 am. Teams already regis- tered for the 2000 Aquarama event include the Rotary River Rats, Devon's Daredevils, Sherry's Survivors, Wanna Partee Inn, Devon's Dolphins, Antrim's Sub Mariners, Uxbridge Rotary U-Boats, 'The Port Perry Star, Edward Jones Investment Group, Port Perry IGA - Moon Cricket Racing Team, Port Perry This Week, Min Com Machine, The Invest Oars Group, David Kelly and Friends, Whitby Investment Planning Group, Parkside Bar&Grill's Parkside Show, Durham College rbrideg Campus, and Centr: Seven Association for Community Living An added feature to this year's event will be a com- petition between Scugog Mayor Doug Moffatt and his counterpart in Georgina, Mayor Robert Grossi Scugog Mayor will represent the township on Aug. 27 when he takes part in a similar event in Georgina.
