12 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 15, 2000 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice' Driver watches in shock as kitten's tossed from truck By Chris Hall Port Perry Star A Nestleton man says he watched in horror as a passing motorist tossed a young kitten out the window of a truck just south of Port Perry. Greg Johnston was driving southbound on Simcoe St. shortly before 7 a.m. last Thursday (Aug. 10) when he saw a man toss a small object out his truck near Scugog Line 4. "The pickup was approaching me, and | wasn't really paying any attention to it, just driving, when something was tossed out the window," said Mr. Johnston. Taking a closer look, he noticed that the object was a small brown kitten, which he guessed to be about three months old. "He tossed a kitten out of his truck while going about 50 or 60 miles an hour, but it hit the ground backwards, on its feet, and started running right away," said Mr. Johnston. Quickly stopping and turning around, the Nestleton man returned to the area where the kitten was and found it quiver- ing in the long grass. As he approached it to help, the fright- ened kitten took off through a ditch and into a wooded area nearby. Unable to find the kitten, Mr. Johnston continued on to work in Raglan, and con- tacted the Uxbridge-Scugog Animal Shelter. Mr. Johnston met Ann Barrett, an ani- mal control officer, at the site around 11 a.m. He found the kitten once again, but was unable to catch it. He checked again twice Thursday night, but the feline was nowhere to be found. "I'm absolutely shocked that someone sould do something so callous to an ani- mal. | feel bad that | didn't get the guy's (license) plate number or anything, but I was watching the kitten," said Mr. Johnston, who keeps two cats as pets. "I don't understand why he couldn't take the extra five minutes or so and take the kitten to the shelter. | hope he's not going around chucking cats out the win- dow of his truck," said Mr. Johnston. "This really, really bothers me. | was driving down the road, not really expect- ing anything, and this guy lobs a chocolate brown fluff ball out the window of his truck." He describes the vehicle as possibly a maroon two-tone GMC pickup with a reg- ular cab. While she admits the story is a horrific one, Mrs. Barrett says these things do happen. "Certainly it happens, which is sad, but it's really surprising that it happened on a busy highway. That's pretty cruel," she said. "It would have been so easy to bring it into the shelter; we would have taken it, no problem at all." News to report?
