Police set up check points and stopped bikers from a variety of gangs who came here to attend the Para-Dice Riders' ninth annual party, held at their lakefront property in Born Thursday, July 6, 2000 in Mississauga on Regional Rd. 57 on both sides of the hamlet Caesarea. Angels a no-show at biker bash From page 1 infractions, licenses and other possi- ble infractions under a fair and equi- table method," said Sgt. Grimley. Some of the 50-or-so police offi- cers present on Saturday from early in the day until after dark said that the bikers from various clubs coming through the check point were, for the most part, cordial and cooperative. Last year's party garnered partic- ular notice from police, with the arrival of about 15 to 20 Hells Angels. Police biker expert Guy Ouellette called last year's appear- ance "a show of support to the (Para) Dice. "They need to show up this year - even if it is just a couple - in order to say to the Dice ' hey we have not for- got you'," Sgt. Ouellette said. In spite of the lack of attendance by Quebec Angels - an absence some police sources say has to do with the recent murder of a club associate and a member of the Angels' rivals, the Rock Machine - there was no shortage of bikes and riders coming through the check point on Durham Rd. 57." As many as 23 members of Oshawa and Toronto Satan's Choice, about 10 members of the Lobos from the Windsor area, and one Last Chance member passed through, along with several riders not wearing the 'colours' of a club. And almost all of the Para-Dice Riders club arrived throughout the day, usually accom- panied by the DRPS helicopter, which was used to track the move- ment of groups of riders as they entered Durham Region. Bikers waved and smiled to media at the site as they waited to pass through police inspections of their sometimes wildly customized bikes. The Para-Dice Riders are still involved in a court action against what members have referred to as "the arbitrary stopping of persons based on their appearance and mode of transport" at such check points. The legal action has so far failed in the Ontario courts, but the club intends to take the issue to the Supreme Court of Canada. They claim the police roadblocks 'infringe upon their constitutional "rights. Local residents passing through the barriers were mostly supportive of the annual police action, but some (none of whom would consent to an interview) were critical of the annual disruption to traffic on the two roads in and out of the sleepy cottage town. In all, about 40 charges were laid as a result of the roadblock checks. Sgt. Grimley said that several Highway Traffic Act charges were laid, as well as other infractions and one temporary license suspension for alcohol to a non-club member was imposed. Sgt. Ouellette of the Quebec Wolverines said that in his mind, these checks are always successful. "There has been an uneasy truce between the clubs in Ontario, but with the move of the Rock Machine into Kingston and Toronto there is a lot of politics with the clubs now in Ontario, and we have to be up-to- date with them very regular now," he said.
