Paying tribute to Jack Cook Fastball tournament this weekend in honour of respected softball enthusiast By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Fastball enthusiasts will be treat- ed to some of the best action in the province this weekend when the first-ever Jack Cook Classic is held. Scheduled to be held July 14-16 at the lakefront diamonds on Water St, the tournament will feature some of the best mens' fastball teams in Ontario, says organizer Dave Kay. All funds raised from the event will go towards an Ontario Amateur Softball Association (OASA) scholar- ship in honour Jack Cook. "Every cent we make from this will be used for students entering their first year of university," says Mr. Kay. It was decided during the OASA"s annual general meeting last April to present three students annually with the scholarship. Revenues from the tournament will allow organizers to raise the scholarship monies from $500 to $1,000. Play is expected to get underway this Friday (July 14) evening at 7 p.m. Games will be held every two hours on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. and running through to 9 p.m. The top two teams in each division will advance to the finals on Sunday, with play beginning at 10 a.m. Teams confirming their participa- tion include the Stittsville 56ers, Toronto Jaguars, Oshawa Juniors, Mount Albert Mudhens, and the Pickering Heat. Two of the best teams in the province -- St. Catharines and Kanata -- are also considering attending the tournament. The event will be held in honour Jack Cook, a long-time local fastball enthusiast, who passed away sud- denly two years ago. Mr. Cook was a founding member and former president of the Port Perry and District Minor Softball Association. He is also a former president of OASA, and was the organization's registrar at the time of his death. "He was very well respected in the game of softball, and we want to honour him for all his contribu- tions to the sport," said Mr. Kay. A swarm of the 3/4 scale Winston Cup lookalikes took the green flag for the Cup Lites 35 lap finale with New York's John McClurg taking the early lead. Succumbing to pressure from defending series cham- pion Jon Price, McClurg relinquished the lead on lap 15, eventually retiring with a sour engine. Price carried on for the win leading Buffalo's Dennis Tybor and former Mosport Late Model competitor Paul Law to the line. Port Perry's Patti Kendry-Diotte made her Cup Lites series debut and gave a good accounting of herself, taking her #36 Pontiac to a 13th place finish in the feature sprint. Orono's Shawn Knapp led the Mosport ThunderCar field for 16 laps in Saturday's feature race but with only four laps to go was involved in a three-wide backstraight scramble, the result of which was a victory for track visitor Larry MacKenzie. Markham"s Doug Lamb avoided the tangle and was rewarded with the runner-up position with Newcastle's Brian Strawn, Oshawa'w Doug Wills and series points leader Terry Shaw rounding out the top five. Rookie Dale Chilvers, from Courtice, earned his best result of the season, a sixth place finish. Oshawa's Bob Kish is rapidly becoming "Mr. Untouchable' in the Terry Cullwick Auto Challenger division. After cruising to two relatively easy heat wins, Kish completed the sweep by taking a 12 car length victory in the 20 lap feature win.
