A native of Port Perry, Ms Adderley has spent her entire teaching career at R.H. Cornish Public School, watching two generations of kids graduate. Her last day on the job will be June 30. "That's my last day. My pension starts on July 1," said Ms Adderley while help- ing direct kids home after the final bell last Thursday afternoon. Upon graduating from R.H. Cornish, Mrs. Adderley attended Port Perry High School before enrolling at Peterborough's Trent University. She then went on to the Toronto Teachers' College. i ' During her career, Ms Adderley taught everything from Kindergarten through to Grade 8, including 17 years in the library. She has spent the last three years teach- ing primary students. After a 36-year career, Ms Adderley feels the time has come to retire, and Public Forum... focus her attention on hobbies and inter- ests. "I've been thinking about it, making a decision, for a couple of years now, and there's so little difference between my pension and my salary that | took it," she said. "It's a lot of work for so little money... it was time to retire." There will, however, be lots of memo- ries to look back on. "There were lots and lots of highlights that I'll remember, but I'll miss the kids terribly," she said. "I'll also supply (teach) a bit." 'Mrs. Adderley still encounters some of her former students from time to time. "I went home for lunch the other day, and there was a guy | had taught in Grade 8 waiting in my driveway with lunch for me," she said. "I hadn't seen him in more than 25 years, but he heard I was retiring and came to see me. It was a nice feeling." A retirement tea for Mrs. Adderley will be held on Thursday (June 1) from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the R.H. Cornish library. Susan Adderley is retiring after more than 35 years of teaching children at R.H. Cornish P.S. in Port Perry.
