It's a dream project for Mr. Foote, head of the film studies department at Toronto's Trebas Institute. He's long admired the work of Mr. Duval, a versa- tile actor and director who has a long list of memo- rable film credits. Mr. Foote has met Robert Duval on a number of occasions. He said he's an approachable, easy- going guy, a genuine per- son who has had great success in the film indus- try without becoming immersed in the culture of Hollywood. He's also among the greatest actors in cinema history, according to Mr. Foote. "I have great admira- tion for the man," he said. "I think he's everything an actor should be. And he's always stayed separate from Hollywood, which 1 admire." Mr. Foote pitched the biography to Canadian publishers without suc- cess, and finally struck a deal with McFarland & Co., an American publish- ing house which special- izes in books on the arts and biographies. Helping increase the publisher's interest in the project is the fact that Mr. Duval has agreed to work with Mr. Foote on the pro- ject. His show-stopping cameo is remembered for one of the most often repeated and mimicked lines in movie history: "I love the smell of napalm in the morning. It smells like... victory!" Mr. Duval recently stunned critics with his turn in The Apostle, an independent film he wrote, produced, directed and starred in. He received another Oscar nomination for his work in the film. "I think it's probably among the greatest per- formances ever on film," said Mr. Foote of the role. "It's easily the best self- directed performance ever." Mr. Foote, who's week- ly movie reviews have appeared in The Weekend Star since the paper's inception, acknowledges that a qual- ity biography must be objective, and vows not to let his admiration for the actor get in the way of telling the whole story. But he also says he's not going to present a kiss and tell Hollywood book. "I told him it would not be a cheesy bio," he said. "I want to talk about his work as an actor." Mr. Duval, 69, has had his share of hits and miss- es, but has always turned in good performances, said Mr. Foote. "He's been in bad films, but I can't recall a point in his career where | thought, that's a bad performance," he said. Mr. Foote has begun research and writing on the book. He hopes to see it published next April.
