Your kitchen 'treasures' are sought for church fundraiser By Heather McCrae Port Perry Star Got a favourite recipe you'd like to give away? Now is your chance to share your kitchen trea- sures with the community in the form of a cook- book. The cookbook is a fundraising endeavour by the Catholic Women's League and the Immaculate Conception and Good Shepherd Schools. Immaculate Conception Church burned to the ground on May 31, 1998, and the parish is now rebuilding. Although the church had $1.6 million insurance coverage, the new build- ing will cost approximate- ly $2.6 million. With seating capacity for 450 people, the new church will have a small chapel, multi-purpose office/meeting space and a basement room that will serve as a multi-use community centre. One form of fundrais- ing for the new church is this cookbook. "We are hoping our project will raise aware- ness in the community of our plight and by every- one sharing recipes it will also bring the people of the community together," said Nora Heffering, one of the committee mem- bers. "We are looking for people to submit good, basic recipes that are made with ingredients usually found in the cup- board," said Emelda Jackson. "Or a family favourite that has been passed down from gener- ation to generation." The eight categories are appetizers and bev- erages; salads, dressings, soups 'and sauces; veg- etables; main dishes; breads; desserts; Friday night suppers, and "extra special". The Friday night dishes can either be seafood or vegetarian recipes. Recipe sheets can be Mackey & Bailey Barrister & Solicitor picked up at the offices of both schools or after mass in the gym at the Immaculate Conception School. For more information about the distribution of the recipe sheets you can give Mrs. Jackson a call at 985-7218. The deadline for submitting that favourite dish or two (or more) is Feb. 25. The cookbooks, which will sell for $10, are expected to be ready by Mother's Day.
