Long before the Port Perry resident captured the bronze medal at the recent Canadian Boxing Championships in St. Catharines -- gaining a third- place ranking in his weight class in Canada -- he had already proven to his family, coach and friends that he wasn't a quitter. The 17-year-old Port Perry High School student began box- ing a little more than three years ago when he joined the Motor City Boxing Club in Oshawa on a whim. "I watched it a bit on TV and I thought I'd like to try it out," recalled the Grade 12 student. "The first night was really hard, | was really sore after. And, when I went into the change room, my coach Don Nelson came in and asked me if | liked it. He said that most kids usually quit and don't last. "But | was determined... | was going to show him | wasn't a quitter. When I left my dad asked me if | enjoyed it and | said that it was going to be my new home, and it has been ever since." Over the past three years, Dales has fought 15 times, win- ning || of his bouts. "I wouldn't say | lost those other ones, it was close," he said. At the Canadian Boxing Championships last month, Dales put his record on the line when he faced off against the best from across the country in the flyweight (112-pound) class. "The first guy," Dales said, referring to his British Columbia opponent in the quarter-finals, "I think I beat him in the first minute or so. "The second guy, | thought | threw way more punches, but it didn't happen for me." He eventually lost to his Albertan opponent 43-41 on a punch-count tiebreaker. "That's pretty good, third in Canada, that's good enough for me," he said. "The more fights | get, the more experience I'll have." And that experience could lead him to bigger and better things in the future. "I'm going to stick with it and hopefully go to the Olympics in 2004, and then go pro after that," said Dales. But, he knows that to reach those goals he will have to be determined. "l train at the club about five times a week for about two hours a day, and the | run the other days, between five- and eight- kilometres," he said, noting that his grandfather was also a boxer. "I like boxing because I like winning. There's always some- one out there as good as you, and you have to be really good to be the best," said Dales. "I like it because it's an indi- vidual sport; it's just you out there and you have to find a way to outsmart the other guy. You just can't go out there and throw all your punches, it's a thinking game. You have to look confident; the guy standing in the other comer is just as scared as you are. You have to look strong in there. "It's a tough sport, and you have to be tough. You don't have to worry about being beaten to death, but it is a tough sport." Port Perry's Clayton Dales is ranked third in Canada in the 112-pound class after winning bronze at the recent national championships. McClelland Port Perry Star The weekend "showdown" between the Port Perry MoJacks and Uxbridge Bruins solved little as far as final standings as the teams split a crucial home-and-home series with a win each. The Mojacks nipped the Bruins 3-2 Friday night in Uxbridge and then 48 hours later the Bruins laid a 6-1 thumping on the Mojacks in front of one of the largest crowds this sea- son at the Scugog Arena. So, after Sunday's action, the race for second-place in the Central Jr. C League is tied with the Bruins and Mojacks having 41 points each, fol- lowed by Georgina with 39. Little Britain, which lost 8-4 to Georgina Saturday, is now officially out of playoff contention. And Georgina could very well jump into that second place tie as they played last-place Bobcaygeon on Monday night. It's a confusing scenario, but it looks like as if the MoJacks won't know their first-round playoff oppo- sition until this coming Sunday night (Feb. 13) when they meet last-place Bobcaygeon in the final regular sea- son game at the Scugog Arena. The MoJacks also have a home-and-home set with Little Britain (Thursday and Saturday nights) while the Bruins and Ice square off home-and-home on Friday and Saturday. Head coach Tom Thornbury put - things in basic terms after the loss to the Bruins. "We can decide our own destiny in the next three games." After tripping up the Bruins 3-2 in a real thriller Friday, the MoJacks had a glorious chance to help decide their destiny Sunday night at the Scugog Arena. But they dug an early hole and were never able to climb out of it as the Bruins took full advan Turn to Page 22 Jackson Water Conditioning Ltd.
