CHRIS HALL/PORT PERRY STAR ANNUAL EXAM: Port Perry optometrist Dr. Darryl Workman held an open clinic at his North St. office for those who suffer from diabetes last week. Even though the provincial government doesn't cover an annual check-up anymore, Dr. Workman says it's important for diabetics -- such as Terry Harlow -- to get a check up. He held his free clinic last Tuesday (Nov. 16). Chief at local hospitals retiring in the new year Guy Kirvan, the top Lakeridge Health official for this area, is retir- ing. The Chief Operating Officer of the Port Perry and Uxbridge hospitals, Mr. Kirvan will retire on Jan. 1, 2000. "Guy has been an integral part of our organization since its formation in 1998 when five hospitals in the com- munities of Oshawa, Bowmanville, Whitby, Port Perry, and Uxbridge amalgamated to form a health care system which serves Durham Region," Lakeridge Health CEO Brian Lemon said in a Nov. 18 press release announcing Mr. Kirvan's plans. Mr. Kirvan was named CEO of pes North Durham RY Health Services in Guy Kirvan April 1997, after ommunity Memorial Hospital in Port Perry was amalgamated with Cottage Hospital in Uxbridge. Kirvan oversaw merger When the two northern hospitals merged with others in Durham form- ing the Lakeridge Health Corporation in 1998, he became COO of the two northern sites, and, in addition, pro- vided regional leadership for food ser- vices and ethics. "We all appreciate Guy postponing his retirement until now. "He stayed on to provide his leader- ship and guidance as Lakeridge Health began to take shape," said Mr. Lemon. "Guy has been key to the formation of leadership teams at the northern sites and our rural health network. We wish him well in his retirement, and want him to know that he will be missed." Mr. Kirvan and his wife Eileen reside in Uxbridge, and plan to con- tinue living there after he retires.
