A ---- "A Family Tradition for 133 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 23, 1999 - 11 Program has been targeted by anti-abortion trustee Prince Albert students take part in UNICEF vote By Chris Hall Port Perry Star The right to having a happy, loving family is at the top of the list of rights children should have, according to stu- dents at Prince Albert Public School. « In a vote held last Tuesday (Nov. 16), stu- dents there chose the right to have a family as their number one need. Having food and shelter as well as the right to an education were second and third, respectively. The vote was part of the National Election for the Rights of Youth, a program sponsored by UNICEF and Elections Canada. The theme behind the election is to make stu- dents aware of the elec- toral process, and what things they may take for granted here in Canada, says Grade 7/8 teacher Marg Snider-McGrath. "They got to vote just as their parents do; they have rights as citizens, and for a change those under the age of 18 got a chance to vote," she said. Students from Grades 1 through 8 had the opportunity to examine about 10 different issues the day before the elec- tion. Other choices included freedom of asso- ciation, speech, freedom of reli- gious belief, and protec- freedom of Pets pose with Santa for shelter Come to The Humane Society of, JQDurham Regions Sixth Annual Pet Photo with Santa. "We kind of used it as a campaign day. The kids got to go around and look at the different rights that today's youth should have, but, unfor- tunately, some don't," said Mrs. Snider- McGrath. "We take a lot for granted in Canada; every child in the world should have all these rights. This is a training and awareness for our students on how much we have compared to others in the world." The children felt empowered by the chance to choose the kind of lifestyle they thought they should be entitled to, said Mrs. Snider-McGrath. "From what I've gath- ered the students thought it was a really great exercise. The younger ones, every one of them, felt important," she said. "This was their spe- cial chance to vote on something important, and they knew their vote was to be included in those 'from Newfoundland to British Columbia. There were taking part in a national event." "It was a wonderful opportunity for them, both nationally and glob- ally. They felt so proud and important doing what their parents get to do," she said. "It was really positive; we got good feedback from the kids, teachers and parents. I don't understand what the problem would be... but some people interpret things differently."
