"A Family Tradition for 133 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 16, 1999 - 3 Council to question homeowners on parking problems By Chris Hall Port Perry Star There were no easy answers for Scugog Township councillors Monday morning when the issue of parking at R.H. Cornish Public School was raised once again. While the problem of parking at the front of the school was easily resolved, council could not find a solution to the parking difficulties on nearby Ottawa St., and, to a lesser extent, to the rear of the Queen St. school. Councillors agreed during yesterday's works committee meet- ing that a tough stance should be taken toward motorists who park in an emergency vehicle lane in front of the school. They opted to contin- ue to enforce the park- ing bylaw, and increase enforcement efforts in the new year. One problem town- ship staff will be on the lookout for is those who park their cars in the centre of the emergency lane and run quickly into to the school. "During last week's rain there were so many cars in the circle, the road was just blocked in there," said Scugog Mayor Doug Moffatt. "There were four cars parked in the circle and no one could get around them, but there was no one sitting in them. Those are the people who leave their cars running in the circle and just say they're going in for a minute. Well, the whole thing was a disaster." : Regional Councillor Ken Gadsden added that stepped-up enforcement must con- tinue throughout the year, and that staff must not be lenient about infractions. "We want this to work; the tragedy that could occur would be significant," said Councillor Gadsden. "We're not writing these tickets for funds, we need to write them so emergency vehicles can get in and out. The law will be upheld." "If someone goes in the school for just a minute he's going to find a ticket on his car," added Mayor Moffatt. But when the discus- sion turned to Ottawa St. and the rear of the school, councillors encountered a stickier problem. "Ottawa St. is a mess," Ward 2 Councillor Ken Carruthers said, refer- ring to the section they'll be stuck there Councillors tossed perhaps Ottawa St. In the end, council between Queen St. and for 10 minutes," he about ideas of restrict- should be changed to a agreed to come up with Hwy. 7A. said. ing parking on one side one-way street. a questionnaire for "How can we enforce "People sit in drive- of the street or the "Maybe we just Ottawa St. residents to (parking bylaws) other ways anyplace they can. other, and forbidding moved the problem to complete.
