"A Family Tradition for 133 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 2, 1999 - 31 These millennium projects can be found at the Blackstock Recreational Centre Dynamic photo gallery, portable gardens unveiled Sunday in Blackstock as part of IYOP celebrations On Sunday afternoon a large crowd attended the dedication of the Portable Gardens and the Dynamic Photo Gallery at the Blackstock Recreational Centre as a celebration of the International Year of the Older Person. Fred Ford was the very capable M.C. for the afternoon's events which opened with Fred explaining how these projects took place. Mayor Doug Moffatt expressed his congratulations and best wishes after which John O'Toole, MPP explained the program by the Ontario Government celebrating this special year designated by the United Nations. John also introduced the special speaker Madame Justice M.M. Van Camp who spoke of the historical aspects of this area. Together she and John unveiled the Dynamic Photo Gallery. The choir, Touch of Country, favoured us with sev- eral numbers both before and following the time of refresh- ments. A social time was enjoyed. Following Mabel Van Camp's suggestion of reading of the history of this area, just a reminder that copies of both Cartwright Revisited by Doreen | Van Camp and the Agricultural Society's History are still avail- able by calling me at 986-4257 if you do not have one in your library. Nancy and Bob Bryans, Gord and Debbie Bryans along with Patti Alpe attended the wed- ding of Nancy's niece Kristen Killens to David Watt of Burketon. Kristen lived here for a few years with her mom Wendy just south of the village in McLean's house. (Coincidently the Stew Garlands and Les and Patty Waters are aunts of the groom and also attended). The wed- ding took place at Columbus United Church and the recep- tion at General Sikorski Hall with a delicious meal. Art and Yvonne Gibson, Cec "and Marie Gibson and Verna . and Cliff Robinson recently held a Gibson family gathering by going out for dinner and spending the afternoon visiting at the Robinson home in Hampton. Congratulations to Kathy McLaughlin who graduated from Queen's University, Kingston at a Convocation held at Grant Hall when she received her Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Degree. Attending were her proud husband, Neil McLaughlin and family Alex, Jessica and Blake. Others in attendance from the area were Jessie and Blake Gunter, Mabel Van Camp, Merrill and Jean Van Camp and Susan Saywell of Oshawa, Jack and Wilma Drinkwater, both of Ottawa. Congratulations Kathy. Anna Forder McLaughlin has returned from two exciting overseas trips as the coach of two skaters. Anne Powers and Jamie Campbell first competed in Pairs Competition in Croatia and a couple of weeks later in Slovenia. Anna reports that these young skaters who work out of the Oshawa Skating Club did a fantastic job in each com- petition. Many friends were saddened to hear of the passing of Russell Bowman last week. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Nov. 14 at 2 p.m. at the Morris Funeral Chapel in Bowmanville. . Recent overnight visitors with Nancy and Bob Bryans at their Cadmus farm were Doreen and Kelvin Jarvis of Hamilton. : On Thursday evening a large crowd enjoyed the spaghetti dinner sponsored by the Cartwright High School Year Book Committee. . The music parents of CH are again hosting the Christmas Craft Show on Sunday, Nov. 28 at the Blackstock Rec. Centre. Plan now to attend. The arena is open and get- ting into full schedule. Curling begins this week. There are still openings, particularly in the Monday evening men's league. Call Cameron Porter or Jan Van Camp for details. . A family birthday supper was held at the Bryans farm to celebrate Patti Alpe and Christina Bryans' big days. There were 15 tables at the Tuesday evening card party with the following winners: Sarah Brunton, Ed Johnson, Elaine Bailey, Norman Rohrer, Myrtle Gimblett, Reid Harness and Joan Johnson. Lucky draws were won by Doris Hill, Irene Hoffman, Muriel Butson, Edna Manns, Ruby Smith and Dorothy Olan. Next Saturday will be a busy evening with the St. John's Church annual fall supper fol- lowed by the Nursery School Dance at the Rec. Centre. Call the nursery school for tickets and information. On Sunday evening, Nov. 7 is an ecumenical hymn sing held at St. John's Anglican Church at which all are wel- come. The Commencement Exercises for Cartwright High School students will be held at Cartwright Central Public School on Friday evening, Nov. 12 beginning at 8 p.m. A great time to help our students cele- brate their achievements. Mark your calendars now. The Black family enjoyed a Thanksgiving dinner at Robbin and Terry Black's home on East Quarter Line. Bev and Shirley Black, along with the rest of the family enjoyed a hay ride around the neighbourhood. On Sunday the senior choir of Blackstock United Church were guests at the Anniversary Service of Norwdod United Church. This Thursday, Nov. 4 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. a special workshop will be held at the United Church, sponsored by Rural Life Committee "What's Good About Being Rural?" It will be presented by Joyce Sasse. On Sunday, Nov. 7 at 9:45 a.m. will be United Church Anniversary Service with Rev. Bruce White, Chaplain at Lakeridge Health, Bowmanville as guest speaker.
