The visitors, who also spent some time in Oakville as well, lost the first game against PPHS but rebounded in the second game for the win. Nutty Chocolatier Bantams Nutty Boys split a pair with Napanee The Nutty Chocolatiers took to the ice Monday night against Napanee. Port Perry grabbed an early lead on a nifty goal by Spencer Churchill set up nicely by Trevor Lance and Derek Bond. Less than two minutes later, Justin Shinn notched his first of three goals assisted by Jamie Smith. Napanee replied with a goal only to have Port Perry storm back with a nice unassisted effort by Derek Bond. Midway through the second period Justin scored his second goal with assists awarded to Steve MacLennon and Jamie. Justin then completed his hat trick scoring just before the end of the second frame with assists going to Jeff Talmey and Ryan Hnatko. Napanee scored their second goal early in the third only to have Port Perry respond minutes later with Trevor finding the back of the net with assists credited to Gordon and Jeff Talmay. Napanee responded with one more goal but this game had already been decided by fierce forechecking by Jeff Tarbotton, Chris McKitterick and James Liske. Mark Lott played strong between the pipes accompanied by strong defence. The Nutty Chocolatiers also travelled to meet arch rival Cobourg. From the opening faceoff Port Perry looked flat against what seemed a well rested and confident Cobourg squad. Cobourg jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead. Port Perry responded with a goal by Jamie Smith assisted by Spencer Churchill. Again in the second Cobourg came flying and added two more as Port Perry missed a few scoring chances as well as missed passes. Cobourg added an early third period goal to take a 6-1 lead. The Bantams did manage to pop a late third period goal by Trevor Lance assisted by Justin Shinn but it was too late and the damage had been done. On Oct. 31 the Nutty Chocolatiers drew first blood with a goal midway through the first frame on a nifty goal by Jeff Talmy assisted by Jeff Tarbotton. Napanee Turn to Page 27 By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star There must be something about teams from the Eastern (Empire) Junior C League that grabs the fancy of the Port Perry MoJacks. In three interlocking outings so far this season against east- ern division teams, the MoJacks have a perfect record. However, at times, they have struggled against teams in their own Central League. The MoJacks got a double helping of the east over the weekend and came away with four hugely important points when they downed the Picton Pirates Saturday night at the Scugog Arena and, less than 24 hours later, thumped the Napanee Raiders 6-1 in a Weekend Warriors Halloween Sunday afternoon encounter in Napanee. ModJack bench skipper Tom Thornbury can't explain why his guys seem to come up with a big effort against the eastern teams, other than to suggest "we just go in blind -- we don't know what to expect." The ModJacks other inter- locking win came Oct. 2 when they doubled Campbellford 4-2 in a game played in Stirling. Whatever the reasons for the early success, coach Thornbury was more than happy with the performance they turned in Saturday to defeat the Pirates 5-4 in a very entertaining match at the Scugog Arena. The Pirates are on top of their league and came into Saturday's game sporting an impressive 7-1-1 record. That didn't impress the ModJacks one bit as they quickly jumped into a 2-0 lead in the first on markers by Dale Drummond and Bill Beaulieu. Coach Thornbury said this was probably the best period of hockey turned in so far this year by the MoJacks. The visitors came alive to score three in the middle frame but a goal by Ryan McQuade left the game knotted 3-3 after 40 minutes. The final period was only 16 seconds old when Adam Metherel put the MoJacks up for good, proving an old adage in hockey that if you shoot the puck on net often enough, it will go in, eventually. m MoJacks continue to dominate against teams from east with a It looked like a routine play as the talented sophomore skat- ed into the faceoff circle to the left of the Pirate cage and fired a slap shot that hand-cuffed netminder Kevin McKenzie. He seemed to have the puck in his equipment but it squirted free and rolled over the line. Assists went to Matt Thurston and defenseman Kelvin Coates. ModJack keeper Jeff Mackie had to be very sharp early in the period as the MoJacks ran into some penalties and the Pirates did some swarming around his cage. But he held them off until the MoJacks took a two-goal lead at 4:05 when John Werry cashed a rebound from the slot after having a couple of whacks at a m 5-4 win over Picton and a 6-1 thumping of the Napanee Raiders bouncing puck. The Pirates made it inter- esting at 14:22 when Josh Stott beat Mackie on a screened shot while on the power play to close the gap to 5-4. But that was all they could get and the ModJacks had a little something extra to celebrate the night before Halloween. "They are a very hard-work- ing hockey club, that's for sure -- they just out-worked us," was the way Picton assistant coach Jeff McMullen referred to the ModJacks after the game. But he promised it will be a different Pirate squad facing the ModJacks this Thursday evening when the teams hook up for a return tilt in Picton. McMullen said he expects Turn to Page 27
