"A Family Tradition for 133 Years" Say Ow! Hep § B shots start Durham Region's Health Department has started its sixth annual hepatitis B immunization program for Grade 7 stu- dents across the region. During the pro- gram, health department nurses will administer the vaccine to approximately 8,000 students in 165 schools. Hepatitis B is a virus that can cause permanent liver damage and sometimes death. Although there is no cure for hepatitis B, it can be prevented for life by a safe, effective vaccine administered in three shots over a six-month period. A person can get hepatitis B from blood and other body fluids of an infect- ed person. The virus can be carried for life and can be given to others through sexual contact, accidental needle stick injury, and sharing dirty equipment for body piercing, tattooing or injection drug use. Babies born to mothers with hepatitis B can also be infected, often becoming lifelong carriers. More than 300 cases of hepatitis B, most in young adults, are reported each year in Ontario. In Durham, 11 con- firmed cases were reported in 1997 and 1998. For more information about hepatitis B, call the health department at (905) 723-8521 or 1-800-841-2729.
