"A Family Tradition for 133 Years" By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Another Scoff is on the way. And to make their effort to provide warm clothing and a hot meal to the disadvantaged in downtown Toronto, stu- dents at Port Perry High School are looking to their community for help. They're seeking dona- tions of clothing, sleeping bags, and even gifts for children as they prepare to launch Operation Scoff in Toronto's Moss Park Dec. 9. It's an effort being undertaken by seven stu- dents enrolled in the OAC Business Administration class at PPHS. As part of their course requirement, students must pursue a project that's beneficial to the community. Operation Scoff -- scoff is street slang for a meal - - was undertaken by kids enrolled in the class last year, and was a great suc- cess. They managed to hand out clothing, blan- kets and a hot meal to dozens of homeless people in the downtown park. The project proved appealing to Kayla Deonarain, Lisa Tripp and Heather Kanabe, three of the students involved in coordinating this year's effort. "It's a great thing to do; it's going to affect a lot of people," said Ms Deonarain. A fact that may be sur- prising to people here is that women and children made up the majority of homeless people who turned to Operation Scoff for warm clothing last time around, said Ms Kanabe. "You go down there and you look into their eyes," she said. "It's women and children." The students are hop- ing to attract donations of clothing and sleeping bags from the community as they prepare for their trip to the city Dec. 9. They will be accepting donations at the school, and also hope to establish drop-off points in the Operation Scoff Students launch effort to provide food, clothing for homeless in Toronto park community to collect items. Other students at the school will be making soup to be distributed during the day, and local businesses have already promised to provide food and transportation. They hope to have everything they're to take with them organized well in advance, so have launched their appeal for donations early. Any clothing left over from Dec. 9 will be donated to the Salvation Army, while any excess funds will be banks in the area. The students admit that the timing of the pro- ject, in the cold days of early December with Christmas looming, 1s appropriate. "Because I've been so fortunate over the years to have everything 1 wanted, I'd like to give something back to the community," said Ms Tripp. "I'd like to see some smiles on their faces."
