"I was really surprised at how quickly everything changed," the Member of Parliament from Saskatchewan said of his trip from Toronto to the outlying regions of the Greater Toronto Area. ~ "Looking around everything was build- ings and traffic and then suddenly I opened my door and everything was beautiful and green," he said Friday in Utica. "I was real- ly surprised of the amount of agriculture that has survived here. We always think of southern Ontario being totally covered in asphalt." 'Out-of-Ottawa' excursion The trip to Durham and the rest of the GTA came as part of the Reform party's annual out-of-Ottawa caucus meeting, said Mr. Morrison, the representative for the rid- ing of Cyprus Hills, home to approximately 75,000 people in southwestern Saskatchewan. During his visit to Durham -- Mr. Morrison was fill- ing in for Vancouver MP Lee Duncan, who was scheduled to make an appear- ance but fell ill -- the opposition transport critic said he enjoyed the opportunity to see one of the country's most densely-popu- Lee Morrison lated areas. "We felt since we were in this part of the country anyway we'd get out and about, checking out the areas and meeting with the local Reform Party Associations," Mr. Morrison said Friday afternoon at Utica Farm Equipment, where he met with a small group of local farmers and association members. "This is quite a pastoral agricultural area; we thought this area would just be a mega- lopolis with nothing but concrete and prob- lems," he said. Stops at hospital Other stops on Mr. Morrison's visit were at the Port Perry Rod and Gun Club, and at Lakeridge Health Port Perry. Mr. Morrison said while the trip into the GTA was not intended to be an attempt to woo votes for his party, Ontario is an attrac- tive target for Preston Manning and the Reform Party. "We already have quite a presence here, especially in the Lake Simcoe and Gray County area. And, as far as our presence in the GTA, we're not the new kids on the block either; we picked up one million votes here in the last election, but obviously that was- n't enough," he said. The Cyprus Hills riding is approximately 250 miles by 150 miles and its main indus- tries are grain farming and cattle ranching. Police were notified by a Lauren Rd. resident last week that a number of personal items were taken from her home over a two-month time frame. A 15-year-old Ajax girl had stayed at the victim's home on and off for a period of time. After she left it was noticed that some items -- including a pair of designer sun- glasses, a cell phone and some clothes -- were missing, said police. The Ajax youth was staying at the home of her 15-year-old friend, police say. The victim's mother conducted her own inves- tigation and then con- tacted police, who were told that more than $500 worth of property was taken from the home.
