At a special ceremony held Friday afternoon (Sept. 17) at the Scugog Community Centre, eight people in their late teens and early 20s officially completed their 24- week project under the Youth Services Canada program. Funded by the federal govern- ment and sponsored by the Durham Region YMCA, the program origi- nally accepted 10 young parents. Over the past six months they have worked to improve their life skills, fine-tune their resumes, and gain experience in their quest for work. "I think the program was pretty well a success," said Lisa Wilson, a local co-ordinator with the project. "Hopefully most of them will get Jobs or go back to school; either way, they're ahead of where they were thanks to this program." Late last spring it was decided there was a need for such a project, and it was arranged through the North Durham Teen Parents com- mittee, she said. "They've done a lot of landscap- ing work, but there has also been plenty of time spent sharpening their employment skills and gener- ally helping them out, getting set for entry back into schdol or the work force." Projects such as these are good ways to ensure the country's future is on the right track, said Durham MP Alex Shepherd, who was in attendance at the ceremony. "This is a positive way to redivert the taxpayers' money to young peo- ple who may not have the same opportunity as others... this opens doors for them and at the same time beautifies the community," he said.
