------------_-- "A Family Tradition for 133 Years" RIDE chec By Rik Davie Special to the Star Motorists in Port Perry got a surprise over the long weekend as Durham Regional Police set up a RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) stop on Simcoe St. just south of town to check for drunk drivers. Police announced recently the new year- round RIDE program will be out to stop impaired drivers at any time, and any place. Durham police spokesperson Sgt. Jim Grimley said that more funding has allowed police to expand anti- drunk driving efforts. "We noticed that the numbers for impaired driving went way down during the traditional RIDE holiday blitzes, and the number of alco- hol related collisions was up at some other times," he said. Sgt. Grimley said that police were able -- with some extra money and some inventive manpow- er management -- to come up with a way to catch impaired drivers all year long. "The RIDE program Sr Ei ER Motorists were surprised by a holiday weekend RIDE check for drunk drivers err eS id £ on Simcoe St. south of Port Perry. Extra funding allows Durham Regional Police to pursue the program year-round now. uses an officer and a vehicle from each of the five major police divi- sions," Sgt. Grimley said. In this way staffing for regular police patrols is not decreased in any one area. The spot check in Port Perry netted police sever- al motorists who, upon seeing cruisers, pulled speedy U-turns. Officers in chase cars were quick- ly on their bumpers. Motorists suspected of or admitting to having consumed alcohol were given a roadside test. Those failing were taken for a breath sample and possible charges. Conviction for impaired driving carries stiff fines, mandatory loss of license and possi- ble jail time. Sgt. Grimley said that the improved RIDE checks should send a message to motorists tempted to drink and drive: "We are out there all year, and at places all over the region, so just don't do it." ea Historica Annual Quilt & Craft Sale Saturday and Sunday August 7th and 8th, 1999 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Cannington Community Centre Admission: $2.50 Free Parking (wheelchair accessible at south entrance) Phone: 705-432-3053 Directory of Coming Events Weekly Tuesday & Thursday Casino Rama Bus Trip 9:15to 10:15 a.m. and 8- weekly runs for $5 perper- 9 p.m. - Durham son and pick up at Scugog Gymnastics Academy.
