| 3h Vol. 133 No. 29 PORT PERRY - TUESDAY, JUNE 8, 1999 COPY 75¢ (70¢+ 5¢ GST) 28P ages O'Toole cruises to easy victory By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Voters in Durham riding helped colour Ontario Tory blue once again in last week's general election. Voters here showed their support for incumbent Progressive Conservative MPP John O'Toole -- and Ontario Premier Mike Harris -- during last Thursday's (June 3) provincial election, once again selecting the Tories by a wide margin. Mr. O'Toole cruised to an easy victory, capturing 26,111 of the 45,761 ballots cast in Durham. Liberal challenger Garry Minnie finished a distant second with 14,694 votes, while NDP candidate Jim Morrison rounded out the top three with a total of 4,245 supporters. Green Party candidate Gail Thompson picked up 467 votes, while Jacinthe Millaire of the Natural Law Party landed 244 ballots. In the end, voters opted to return the Harris government to Queens Park for another term, handing them a second con- secutive majority government. The PC Blueprint policy platform, a sequel to the Common Sense Revolution released in 1995, promises 20 per cent cuts to personal income tax and the provincial portion of education property tax, the cre- ation of 825,000 new jobs and a $3.9 bil- lion injection into health care. The first 5 per cent installment of the income tax cut is scheduled for July 1, while property tax relief is retroactive to Jan. 1. After it was all over, the Conservatives ended up with 59 of the Legislature's seats and the Dalton McGuinty-led Liberals found themselves with a total of 35 elected MPPs, good enough for official opposition party status. New Democratic Party leader Howard Hampton won his home riding of Kenora- Rainy River, but his party fell short of the 12 votes they needed for official party sta- tus when only nine seats were won by NDP candidates. Tr Teens start charity for sick kids By Lindsay Sheehan Port Perry Star A group of students at Port Perry High School have estab- lished a permanent charity for children. OAC business administration class students Kasey Briley, Nicole Welts, Heather Richardson, Kelly Donneral and Keely Smith are founding a registered charity to help sick kids. They are trying to help children in Scugog Township with serious illnesses such as AIDS, cancer and cystic fibrosis. The charity will raise funds for families who need help with travel, food and accommodation expenses they incur while their chil- dren are treated. The charity's major sponsor is the Port Perry High School walkathon, which is held annually. The students hope to raise $10,000 for their charity. The students are responsible for filling out forms and mak- ing calls to people in the community. Business class teacher Dave Robinson will use this charity for future class fundrais- ers, so it will be an ongoing venture. Part of the business administration class requirement is to hold a community event which raises funds for a charitable cause. Many institutions and families in Scugog have benefit- ed from student-run efforts such as dinner theatre, communi- ty luncheons, and the annual Halloween haunted house. Students in this year's business class have determined that there is a need for a charity like this here. A board of directors comprised of volunteers from the community will decide how the money is spent, and will evaluate cases.
